Chevrolet has announced that next Impala will share a rwd platform with the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro, which will be built late in 2008. Impala production will start several months later, a GM source said.

That RWD platform has delivered 300k miles by many taxi drivers and being a tank, it has 5 star crash ratings. The downside is city mpg (it actually does pretty well on the hwy), but I don't drive enough to worry about it. The Yaris is 7 months old and has <3k miles.
local dealers are advertising brand new GM's for 19K.... PW, pwr seat, PDL, tilt and cruise, cd player, 4.6 v8 engine..my '96 grand marquis was the best damn long distance road trip car i have EVER owned!PICK3 said:

even better! gotta read the fine print in the ads...many of those prices include an "owner loyalty" rebate..
my '96 GM (same engine/transmission as an '07) got 18 to 21 mpg, 50/50 mix of i-10 and stop sign to stop sign in metairie driving, but would get 27 to 29 straight interstate running at 70 to 85 mph.

Bohn has a similar ad also for $17,299 in Sat's TP.
If I thought I could get 18 mpg I'd buy one tomorrow, but because the nature of my driving (all short trips) I always get less than published mileage. Even in the Yaris I get 7-8 less mpg than the old EPA estimate (btw that just changed).

I'm afraid if I got a GM I'd get 11-12 mpg
the GM didn't drive like it's size would suggest....it drove like a smaller car. tight, quick steering without the usual ford slop in the center, well balanced brakes, peppy engine/transmission...unlike some sluggish slush box transmissions, it was calibrated to downshift one, two or occassionally 3 gears when the gas was tapped..it felt quicker than the actual numbers suggest. 
extremely reliable...NOTHING broke in 135K miles! the extended warranty was a waste of my tax refund.
although there was nothing special about the seat construction, i found them very, very comfortable. i routinely made the 10.5, hour 715 mile run from nawlinz to n.e tennessee, stopping only to fill the car's tank and empty mine, and still be able to function when i got there.
since it's the same basic car ford/mercury has made since 1992, i guess it's well sorted out and gone thru by now.
if i had the driveway width (insert p3 joke here
) now that i had in the 'burbs; i wudda bought another one in a hearbeat.

I have good friends moving to Amite so I'll be doing more hwy driving than soon than I do now (see how I'm trying to justify getting a GM

Not a bad car for the price range. If that is what's in your budget, then get it and be proud of it.
i would think 16 to 18 in stop and go city driving would be possible....IF u keep your foot outta da gas..... 
dood.......i've prolly gone thru as many cars as you have...the GM is one of the few cars i have owned that i would buy again. if i ditch the bywater money pit in the next couple of years i WILL get another one. the car just fit me right, ya know?
at this point in my life, i buy cars that make ME happy, not cars that make other peeps happy.
get one for a weekend loaner and u will be pleasantly su-prised.

I've driven Crown Vics before. My boss has a GM LS with alloys and leather. He claims to get 17 mph daily commuting.

my state police buddies moan about the switch to the chevy impalas...to a man they all want their old crown vics back.

I didn't sit in much traffic. Left about 4 a.m. crossed the Causeway to I55 to Jackson, MS then to Searcy, AR for 16 days.
Evacuating via I10 isn't an option.
