20 Rep Squats.

Did my first set today....

2x10x135
1x20x135...

I know the weight wasn't much and it really didn't feel heavy...(I usually low-rep squat in the upper 3's low 4's) but made me pretty tired.

Think I'll try the same thing in a few days with 185.

Any advice? (other than have a spotter ready to catch me when I pass out?
:)

It helps me if I break up the set in my mind: I'll go for a 10, then rest for a few breaths (if I need to), then go for a 5, then a 3, and finish with a 2 or two singles:

10 +5 +3 +2 = 20, but it feels like less!

I try to get the whole lot out in one go if possible, but this scheme gives me more confidence when I get under the bar.

I'm up to 200pounds for 20 rep sets now: got 225 in my sights!

just set the safety bars up in the power rack, and go at it.

I worked up to 3x20 - 185. My next workout I was able to do 315x4 (Natural and 6'5" tall). Good advice above to take a number of deep breaths between repa after 10. Don't quit your set, just push through. You will find unbelievable strength when you go heavy again.

when im doin my high rep workout for squats i,ll shoot for 3 sets of 20 @225...

one thing i find that helps when counting to 20reps is count to 10, then count back down from 10 to zero..... to me the lower numbers in the countdown from 10 psychologically makes it a bit easier... im guessing because 17,18,19,20 etc...sounds like more than 6,5,4,3,2,1 etc....

breaking them up like you said is a good idea also..and is another method i use to get through the pain...

if you can squat 405-425 then you should be able to do 20's with at least 275, probably 315.

they should feel like the end of the world, not a light cardio workout ;)

personally I think 20 is too high, too easy to break form on those last few reps and hump your back.. 15 reps is a better number for rest/pause work and it lets you hit the legs with a little more weight

You will find unbelievable strength when you go heavy again.

then again you might not.. my squat drops a lot if I do high rep work for more than 3 weeks straight

i'd only do 1 set of 20 reps. if you can do more than 1, you should be doing more weight.

I guess I just get a better mind/muscle connection when upping my reps and I end up working them harder. I don't have good leverage being tall so this seems to work better for me. Thanks for reminding me that we all respond differently.

I'm too much of a pussy to do anything above 225 - 20 reps, because I'm afraid my legs will collapse once I reach 17 or 18. It's all MENTAL!

That is correct. You should be picking a weight that you have to struggle to get 10 reps with, and then proceed to do 20 with it. The original poster is going way too light. He probably should have warmed up with 135, and gone right to 225x20, and built up from there.
