100g of Carbs or less?

I was reading Lyle McDonald's book Ketogenic Diet and something that stood out was the brain requires 100g of carbs or greater to function. If this number is decreased below 100g, the body will search for an alternate energy source to supply the brain with glucose. So, my question would be if we kept our diets balanced using low index carbs during the morning and afternoon, and tapering them off the last 3 meals (Keeping carbs under 100g per day), would the same benefits of a KETO diet apply to the dieter using this plan?
