I'm assuming most people with college teaching jobs get some kind of instruction on how to utilize blackboard. Since I am last minute filling in for someone else and didn't have it when I was in college, I'm completely lost.

I have the syllabus posted, the course calender set up with quizes/tests/assignments, and instructor information up. For a scuba class designed so that a ten year old can pass (youngest age to be certified through PADI), I'm not sure how much more detailed I need to be getting. That said, these kid's families are paying almost more than anywhere else in the country to send their kids to this school, so I feel obligated to make sure I'm offering them the most resources possible.

Other than what I listed having posted up, and possible announcements, is there any other section that I really need to be paying attention to, given the class I'm teaching? Students who use this can answer, too. How much of a role does this play if I'm not going to be posting assignments and such? It seems like a lot of the places I can enter info are covered in the syllabus.

Hey i use blackboard and what I find helpful is going to the calendar. And on certain dates it will have links like when the quiz is, or when an assignment is due. I really find that helpful, I see you already have that

Who cares if they are paying a lot for this class, youre not the one that charges those prices. As long as you are teaching them enough and giving them enough information so they can easily pass then you are good.

I think you pretty much got it going good with the calendar/syllabus

Very helpful, thanks a lot :)

I always check the assignments, calender and grades sections

feedback from the professor is incredibly important to me on an individual level...I hate it when a professor puts a class on autopilot...but im guessing this would a kinda autopilot type class

as a side note...Ct has a new little college built for working adults that uses blackboard for all of its courses except proctored exams and some labs
goes up to a BA or BS too!

ok....grades....do they post every grade from quizes and tests on blackboard? And only the students can see their own information?

ah yes post grades as soon as you can! thats ALWAYS a plus, i love seeing my grades right away. And yes only you can see your own grades.

Id make it organized too, like quiz 1, quiz 2, test 1, etc.

as a general rule yes...most classes are kind of done on a points system...you earn points towards your grade for a total that is equiv to an A/4.0.

and yes, the students can only see their own grade info

one professor I had, had an extra credit section that included links related to the general class and you basically had to comment on it for like...10 points (overall class points were 1500)

class discussion is very interesting if you're dicussing something like lit, or sociology..but I don't know how that would translate to something like SCUBA
its generally not moderated but I would imagine for kids you'd have to keep an eye on it

this^^^ comments along with grades for anything big like essays/papers is appreciated...Im guessing essays and papers aren't part of this class tho...lol
