Dishonoring the Dead in Haiti

Tonight on AC360°, Anderson demands answers and accountability about why the bodies of earthquake victims in Haiti are being dumped, not buried; just dumped in a landfill outside Port-au-Prince.

When the trucks arrive at the landfill, the names of the dead aren't logged in a book, photos aren't even taken of the bodies. Men, women and children are just dumped, with no respect, no dignity.

WTF are they suppose to do though? Given the situation I don't see any other way.

Maybe with all those hundreds of millions those charities got - perhaps they could buy some caskets aside from mansions for their execs. This is America's responsiblity, not Haitis!

who is doing the dumping? Haitians? I know they're the ones who are rioting the food banks and other places set up to give aid to them. It's strange to me that when you are in need and someone offers you help, that you would attempt to hurt or kill them to take what they were simply trying to give you. Just doesn't make sense. Savages.

Former NBA player Paul Shirley I think summed it up in his letter to Haiti -

"Dear Haitians –

First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.

As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

Sincerely,

The Rest of the World"

OMG if a white guy wrote that exact same letter - can you imagine the outrage??!!!

Funny during that telethon not a single person would dare say something like that. Hence why Hollywood = No integrity.

so they're doing mass graves or are they still mass burning bodies???

i saw something on msn a few weeks ago. some country that didn't have enough space to bury their dead. they'd have funerals and bury them in a cemetery. but, after decomposing, the bones were dug up stuffed in a mausoleum in the cemetery, and they'd just keep reusing the open graves.

i overheard two old idiots talking this afternoon. their thoughts were when acts of god happens (earthquakes tsunami's etc.) dead bodies should be taken from the country and thrown into the bottom of the ocean. there theory was it's helping out the country it happened in because then they don't have to deal with burying, burning, running out of land to bury the bodies. and that its also helping the ocean animals via food and reefs made of bone.

that would be fawked up to see the church of bones in the ocean.

Dead bodies smell really bad.
Animals will eat dead bodies if left out in the streets.
Survivors probably don't really want to be surrounded by dead bodies in the street.

This whole Haiti thing pisses me off.
We are a VERY generous nation, and have given help to countries we will never gain anything from for many years. Haiti has received from us many times over, and yet now our "news" makes it out as if the mess there is somehow our fault. IT WAS AN EARTHQUAKE!!! Pure and simple a natural disaster. Much of the lack of infrastructure is because they as a country failed. I don't mind helping them but the mess isn't my responsibility to pay for or feel guilty about. I pulled this from an email I received. It was written with less compassion than I feel, but illustrates my point.

"In the 1700’s what is now Haiti was called the “Jewel of the Caribbean,” and supplied about 40% of the world’s sugar.
In 1791 the government of France passed legislation to phase out slavery in its Caribbean colonies and grant the former Negro slaves citizenship. Rather than becoming citizens, Haiti’s Negro population mass murdered all whites and Mulattoes who could not flee the Island in time. In 1804 only full blooded Negros remained and Haiti became the first Negro ruled nation. The Haitian revolution dominated America’s debate over slavery. While both the north and the south agreed that slavery should be ended, southerners and a large percentage of northerners universally opposed having a large population of freed slaves living in their midst.. The Haitian “Revolution” was fresh in every one’s mind.
Flash forward to 1915. The “Jewel of the Caribbean” is now a desolate cesspool, that is exporting almost no sugar. The United States decides to “take up the white man’s burden” and send the US Marine Corps to rebuild Haiti’s infrastructure and feed it’s starving population.
The United States gave huge amounts of money to Haiti and over-saw the building of 1,000 miles of road, telephone lines, modernized its port, and helped Haiti to start exporting sugar once again. The US also put an end to the thousands of bandits along Haiti’s border with the Dominican Republic. The US left in 1934 at the request of the then stabilized and very ungrateful Haitian government.
Haiti immediately sank straight back into total desolation strife. In 1973 the United State once again began playing a huge role in Haiti, giving the Island huge sums of money in handouts each year.
In 1994 the Clinton administration once again sent the US military to Haiti to rebuild the Island’s infrastructure.
In 1995 the Peace Corps went to Haiti in large numbers to train the Haitians in job skills. The US government spent almost one Billion providing food and job training to the Haitians between 95 and 99.
So when Obama says that Haiti has our “full, unwavering, support,” they have already had our full support since 1915.

I guess they are afraid of disease and plague and for good reason. Is it awful?? yes, could it have been prevented?? no, is there more we can do?? maybe.. so what now??
