As far as CarMax cars...as much as I hate those bastards, they get their cars from the exact same place every other dealer in the country gets their inventory from (manheim auto auctions).

Suzuki's are cheap POS's. For the money they're okay, but you can find nicer cars for not much more.
There are quite a few options as far as AWD vehicles that will fit in your price range, but seeing is how you're on a budget and not wanting to spend an arm an a leg the Impreza is really probably the best choice as long as you like the way it drives. You can pick a 2008 with about 15k miles up for around 13-14 grand and it's still under factory warranty.
