id look at subarus, audis and vw first, but i havent been following the market at all lately and i hear audis are bloody expensive to repair.

I had studded snow tires once.....I tried several times to do burn outs to make sparks, but then I realized I had a pos mercury cougar incapable of burnouts...
The MKZ is just a rebadged Ford Edge...Not worth the money, and you won't find one in your price range, and if you do I would be suspicious.
As far as CarMax cars...as much as I hate those bastards, they get their cars from the exact same place every other dealer in the country gets their inventory from (manheim auto auctions).
The only buick SUV worth owning is the enclave, and it's way out of her price range.
Suzuki's are cheap POS's. For the money they're okay, but you can find nicer cars for not much more.

There are quite a few options as far as AWD vehicles that will fit in your price range, but seeing is how you're on a budget and not wanting to spend an arm an a leg the Impreza is really probably the best choice as long as you like the way it drives. You can pick a 2008 with about 15k miles up for around 13-14 grand and it's still under factory warranty.
