C'mon dude, Tim Sylvia? You used him and his fight with Mercer as some example of what happens when an MMA fighter meets a boxer? You're basically looking at the same skill set except that Mercer was world class......Sylvia despite being the UFC champ is "horrible". He was only champion because of the utter lack of competition in that division during that time period. I mean didn't Kimbo basically tackle Mercer and beat him the fuck up? What would happen to Mercer if he fought another over the hill MMA'er like Coleman? Former world class wrestler against former world class boxer.........I guarantee Coleman isn't going to stand there with his chin up and out so that Mercer can throw and overhand bomb. The last thing Mercer would see is the top of COlemans head right before he takes that leg. In an MMA match the average wrestler will womanize the average boxer........we've seen this too many times to really debate it. I give boxers all the credit in the world for being "boxers", but as soon as one of em thinks he can step in an MMA ring with little or no MMA training, rely solely on his boxing, the end result has historically been rather predictable. Nothing in their long boxing training remotely prepares them for a guy who's shooting in. Once they're on their back it's game over. Even the hardest punchers can't KO a guy who's got his head down and streaking in for a leg. If you don't have MMA training you have no clue how to defend that let alone know what to do once you're on your back. You have to be striker with the accuracy of Anderson Silva to even have a prayer of staying away from a wrestler while throwing hands at him. Your margin for error is approx zero.

WHo said they wouldn't be working wreslting and BJJ if they wanted to go into mma. There are boxers that can win in the UFC. Ever hear of Kermit Cintron, bell, and mike alverado? They crush most guys in mma cause of legit wrestling background. No 155'er would be able to take his power. He'll take there's but they wouldn't be able to take his. Believe me elite boxers will tag an mma guy easy if they wanted to w/ the training. We just haven't seen an elite boxer in mmma yet. MMA guys are the ones thinking they can come in to boxing and hang. They downgrade boxing and run at the mouth. It's insulting to think they could last 1round under boxing rules. They get hurt in the worse way. Look at how many low tire boxers that turned to mma and do great. Ex. spencer fisher, bonner, and marcus davis to name a few. None of them couldn't make a mark in boxing giving the best they had. Boxing is way harder. You ani't going to find anyone training for a 1 yr. like in mma and do well in boxing....you know it dosen't happen. Give me a examples of this great boxer that just trained for 2 yrs and is the top ten? You couldn't. There is people in the UFC.

If boxing is the superior striking art, why do MMA peeps study Muay Thai, kick boxing, etc ...

Why don't they spend all their time on conventional boxing training?

There simply not just boxers. Fights can win standing or on ground. From western boxing they learn oh to fight off angles, how to counter sloppy punhces, move on there feet, set strikes up, and looking for oepenings for a huge bomb of fists. Muay thai, they took the low kicks, clinch, and knees from that art to use in UFC, and kickbokers they used there high, med, and low kicks to all parts of the body from that. Learing all those things helps someone in the cage. You'll need more then just one art, but some arts haven't truley been tested. I remember Dana white, shutdown the talk of sherk wanting to fight kermit cintron. Dana acted like a bitch. He knew kermit was jsut a boxer but was a great wrestler in his own right. Dana was scared to let the fight happen.

Most MMA fighters do have boxing coaches.

Boxing is the superior sport, not the superior art. That is our point. The level of athleticism and competition in boxing is leagues above MMA. A guy like Anderson Silva would be a very typical contender in pro boxing. In MMA, he's a superstud.

The promoters lied to Mercer for 8 weeks, telling him that it was going to be a boxing match against Sylvia. Then two days before the fight, they changed the rules and gave Mercer the option to either fight MMA rules or not fight at all. At that point Mercer has his own money invested in his corner. All those people in his entourage need to be paid whether the fight goes on or not.

unless I'm mistaken I beleive the point that you and jacob are trying to make is that an elite boxer can step into an MMA ringt with "just" his boxing skills and pwn. To this I'm saying you're trippin. If I'm reading that wrong, my bad. Of course there very well may be some elite boxers who if they took a few years off to train MMA they may very well make an impact. You don't learn a world class sprawl overnight, and that's what those guys would need to even stand a chance.

I don't know those guys, but are you saying they're boxers or wrestlers? On one hand you're making the point that they're elite boxers but than say that they also have "elite" wrestling background.......soooooo, they're pretty much MMA'ers?

My 2cents...

UFC having the "best" heavyweights is nothing but Dana White and media hype. I'd put Brett Rogers and Alistair Overeem up against any of the UFC's heavies. The UFC literally has only ONE legitimate heavyweight in Brock Lesnar. A few of their heavies could even cut to Light heavyweight. And brock has 4 pro fights, with one loss already, and he hasn't fought anyone. Randy Couture at what 68 years old? Frank Mir hasn't beaten anyone in years (don't count Big Nog, he is way past prime).

People complain that Fedor fights freak show fights against 300+ lb 7 foot tall mammoths, but a fedor Brock lesnar fight would be the same damn thing Fedor's been doing for the past three years.
