Yes I am. My father on the other hand is not, he thinks doctors would let him die so they'd have organs to sell.

Still on the cycle and it's doing awesome man. I have never been as big and lean as this before. I will be done just after chrismas and then plan on doing hgh. I have decided to get down to 8% :)

My husband and I are both organ donors and we have both discussed end of life wishes with each other and our kids.

How do you donate it and then the hospital you are at make a profit off it? Always confused me. I can understand reasonable costs for transport and harvest, but damn, it doesn't cost 40,000 to drive a kidney from Philly to DC.

I would prefer to sell my organs allowing my progeny and loved ones to benefit. More people would be coaxed into donating if there were an incentive.

If you're really serious about that then I stronglyurge you to have advance directives and actually have forms signed and put away with your will. My father in law always said that was what he always wanted done but when he passed away his wife got cold feet and wouldn't donate his body.

Yeah, I'm actually going to donate any usable parts and then be creamated but I really for some reason don't like the idea of people experimenting on my corpse. I know it won't matter to me once I'm dead, but still it is a troubling, irrational thought. Plus, I don't think my surviving loved ones could take the thought of that.

Well, just for the sake alleviating your mind (or the mind of anyone else who might hesitate about the organ donation issue because they think weird things will happen to their corpse), most donations have to come from a still living, but brain dead, body and generally your family has to sign the papers even if you've chosen to be an organ donor.

As for experiments, about the only really weird thing that can happen to a body is plastinization which preserves it forever (then the body gets to be a museum or art exhibit). There's anatomy studies, crash tests, decomposition studies but not any really weird experiments that I can think of (maybe Chris can think of some other things).

These guys take your body and practice surgery and learn to use new equipment on you. It's not as weird as decomp stuff, but how they dance around whether or not they use donated bodies for profit.....beats me.

It is tragic, but just as tragic are the patient with cystic fibrosis waiting on lungs, people in renal failure waiting on a kidney, a young man with haemochromatosis waiting on a liver........

Yes I am an organ donor.

Right now in the UK there is a big push to have an opt out of being an organ donor rather than an opt in scheme.

Thats what made me wonder, how many people on EF were donors already. It's an interesting idea.

WHAT?!? A push for opting OUT?! You're making that up! What dumb shit started THAT fucking trend and more importantly, WHAT IS THE REASONING BEHIND THIS?!?
 
non trauma transplants will hopefully be obsolete in the near future though. Did you hear about the trachea grown of stem cells around a donor scaffolding? I think we'll be able to use an artificial scaffolding before long.
 
Interesting article I read today.

A lady had part of her esophagus transplanted from a donor...there's a catch though. They took this donor's esophagus, removed all the cells such that there was a collagen scaffolding, then used the patients stem cells to grow into the esphagus. In 6 weeks it looked like it belonged to the patient. Absolutely no issues with the body rejecting it.

Tissue engineering has always had the problem of scaffolding and venous systems. You just cannot grow these up from nothing and expect this thing to work.

trachea.....but yeah, that's the idea, building it around a scaffolding......they're also working on 3d inkjet printers that could build hearts etc.

I think you misunderstand.

Right now you have to become an organ donor by opting in.

The scheme that is being proposed is that everyone is an organ donor,if you don't want to be one then you have to opt OUT, rather than opt in (which is how it is right now in most countries).

Gotcha, okay, classic case of two countries separated by a common language.

I don't think a default to organ donation would ever work in this country, people are too paranoid that someone will pull your plug so rich people can get organs.
 
I am definitely a donor. If there's one thing I owe to society its my organs when I'm dead.
