Gifts for guitar players?

nimbus

Hey, tryin to get my dad a sweet gift for father's day this year. it's tough cause he works all the time and doesn't really have any hobbies. he used to play guitar and be in a band, but i feel like he hasn't played in a while.. i'm thinking it would be cool to get him something that could reignite his passion for it, but i haven't the foggiest clue what that might be.

thanks for any help!

I can only think of a bunch Of little things. You could get him some guitar picks with his old band's name on it. That'd be cool. And throw in a capo, strap, strings. A bunch of basics so if he wants to start back up he's all ready to go.

what kind of music did/does he play? what kind of guitar(s) does he have (solid body electric/acoustic/acoustic-electric)? has he been out of the game for a while? long enough that it might be good to have some lessons? maybe not lessons to learn necessarily but to challenge him to knock the rust off his skills and maybe pick up some new ideas, etc.

he plays blues. he definitely had an electric, and i want to say it was a fender. i think he would be rusty for sure; i wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't played for a year.

he definitely isn't the type of person who would want lessons, and with his busy scheduled he'd never go anyway. i was thinking about trying to set him up with some sort of midi interfacing hardware/software where could plug in his guitar and play some sort of app/game that helps him shake off the rust.

a confounding factor is that he has also has De Quervain's tenosynovitis, which is a wrist/thumb issue, and this might have contributed the decrease in his time spent playing guitar. but i think he'd still be grateful for guitar stuff even if he is physically limited in what he can do

by the way, i really appreciate the help everyone. he definitely deserves something nice this year, so it means a lot to me to get these great suggestions

GuitarPort | Line 6 That used to be the thing for plugging the guitar into a computer for practice/learning/jamming type situations, but since they're closing down the online part next month, I guess time has moved on. I dunno what the hot thing is now, they've probably got apps for the iPhone/iPad by now that do the same thing for $25.

keyboards > guitars

No. Keyboard-based music sucks. Keyboards to add texture to guitar music are fine though, as long as they're real instruments like a piano, Hammond organ, or Wurlitzer Electric Piano, and not tinkly synth patches.

If he plays blues, you could get him a slide too.

I was the custodian of the B3 when we had one at work. But they sold it. For some reason the Leslie 122 didn't go with it, and I ended up with that when the new owner said "what's that ugly brown thing and what can we do to make it go away?"

Now I need something to plug into it. I'd like to find a little Hammond M3 spinet.

I grew up with an H-395 (B3 knockoff) home version. Internal speaker/rhythm section ... a tr00 monster

sold it to a blaque church in N.O. years ago.

had a teacher with a M-3. M3/Leslie combo wood be sweet

actually exposed to moar C-3's (sevice organ) growing up

Of course B3 and C3 are exactly the same except for the furniture. And A100 is the same as those except with an internal speaker. RT3 is the same but with an AGO pedalboard.

Many of the spinets have the same tonewheel generators and will make the same sounds as a B3/C3, but with less conveniences and features. Lots of hit records were cut with M3, M100 and L100 spinet organs. "Green Onions" was cut with an M3, for example. If it's a Hammond, has tonewheels and tubes, it'll make The Sound.

close, butt knot exactly

My H was a tonewheel was considerably higher in the home organ line than the M, butt still varied significantly from the 3's especially in the delayed percussive effect

the "closest organ in the spinet bunch" to approach the B-3 sound "is the M3"

HOWEVER their are some major differences:

  • The spinet organs had 5 fewer tonewheels in the generator than the console organs as the keyboards did not go down as far in pitch as on a full console organs such as the B-3.
  • Another difference is in the wiring of the keyboards. On console organs, the tones are routed to the manuals through different lengths of resistance wire intended to taper and shape the tone when played in different parts of the keyboard giving a smooth, balanced sound from all keys on the keyboard. On spinets, all the resistance wires are the same length so there is no tapering within the keyboards which gives a slightly different less balanced sound. Also, on spinets there is no foldback; the tones are simply missing instead of repeating an octave lower at a reduced amplitude as occurs at the top end of a console keyboard. This gives a "thinner overall sound".[12] If the 8th or 9th drawbars on Hammond spinets are pulled out for example, the final octave on the upper manual does not sound; on the A-100, B-3 and C-3, though, these harmonics would sound. To replace the missing harmonics, some 2000s-era users of spinet organs purchase foldback "mod" kits or harvest parts from other instruments that add new key contacts and where necessary longer bussbars (necessary on the M, M-2 and M-3 spinets) to fill in the missing tones.

  • Further, because of the missing tones, the percussion on spinet organs is generally triggered from the 8th rather than the 9th drawbar because the 8th drawbar reaches higher up the keyboard giving the percussion more playable range. Playing registrations such as 88 8000 010 or 88 8000 001 with percussion on will therefore sound quite different depending on whether they are played on a spinet or -3 series console Hammond organ.

Sampling technology allowed dedicated midi controled boxes to closely emulate the B3/C3's unique sound (including clicks and imperfections)

finally,

If you don't want to move a B3, a digital Hammond is far and away the best option - a spinet doesn't really sound like a console and it doesn't have the same features - yet they weigh half as much as a console model - whereas a Hammond-Suzuki XK-3 sounds very much like a B3, has all of the B3 features (although not so conveniently laid out) and can be carried under your arm...

14 year old up the cul-de-sac
whose mom I knew from the gym
"she says you're that hot guy down the street"
yeah well
she's 24 now after a 2 year stint at Hooter's with 2 kids

and her mom looks better now
ran into her in the Winn Dixie parking lot
but I had already blew it with her by passing her over a few times prior
not because of her daughter
just because i thought she would get fat
I knew she would be a good fuck
but for how long?

Yeah, I'm aware of those distinctions. They'd make a difference to a serious jazz or theater organist, I doubt I'd care much. If I get an M3, I might eventually put a foldback kit in it.

Oh, and check out Keith Emerson abusing a poor little L100 at the end of this clip:

Did the H have tubes? I thought it was a transistor organ?

Mixture of solid-state and tube circuitry. Great organ in its day, just knot a B-3.

I agree, any vintage Hammond w/Leslie combo wood be a kick to own

btw, Keith was my childhood idol :)

reminds me
sort of
the time I was drunk in some club
redneck club
and some younger guys about half my age
"mike hit the punching bag thing"
wtf
you did it before and scored the highest hit of the whatever
fuck me I forgot
what I did remember was to throw a punch like you have a piece of paper beneath the throwing armsocket
and don't let that piece of paper fall
that simple instruction, simple to recall, if followed, concentrates the energy of your punch
from your body mass

it's great acting how their measure of concern registers on their faces as the gimp is
well fuc me

I spoke today with the bro I had seen Reservior Dogs at the theater when it opened

I had read a positive review in the Wall Street Journal
I shit you not

my wife
ex wife claimed she decided to marry me after we saw
Pulp Fiction in th theater
and I spent the time until the show in the neighboring book store "military isle"

our first movie was Goodfellas
