Should I give friends better rates?

Those of you who own a business know, people you barely know start to become your "friends" when they want a deal on your services.

I've caved a few times and given lower rates, but now I have a friend I've known since I was 10 yrs old, but not seen in like 3 yrs who wants to come see me and I feel I should give her a reduced rate as well.
What reduction would you give a friend?

i find the dichotomy of chasing an abundance of toxic conventional meds down with naturopathic superfood smoothies a source of immense self amusement

Freebies/reduced priced services that will likely generate moar biz makes sense

Freebies for free loaders can turn into a career in itself

So Theoak, says same price and others say "give a deal why not". The ND I apprenticed with gave no deals. Except to family.
I know for me, if I needed a friends services, I would want a deal,
Pick, when I was starting out, I was offering free consults and reduced rates to get business, but then my sister who has a very successful business said "Never give it for free or reduced rates". Yet she is the most generous person I met (next to me) yet in business is firm.

In any case, this one friend I mentioned I would give a reduced rate, but not sure I should do this again in future.

How full up is your time now? As demand for you goes up, so should your rate.

If you want to have a sliding scale tied to financial need of the customer, that makes sense too. For people who are truly a "friend" they should have no problem paying full rate if it doesn't burden them at all. If you're worth it, they should pay it.

My business (not owned by me) has published rates at which we almost never sell. That way everybody feels like they get a deal. Actual price is determined by how much benefit our product will provide, the total volume sold to each customer, and what competitive pressure exists to keep our prices low. Even to a certain extent, the financial health of the customer.
 
no...never...i give professional discounts to other professionals that extend the same courtesy to me...otherwise, nada. however, i do tend to give away a lot of free analysis/advice during the year.
 
IMO friends should be understanding ESP in this day with how hard it is for a business to succeed and by giving discounts to people is chopping away at any profits . On the other hand when you get down the line and business is doing well there's no harm in giving a couple one offs away cheap

You're in business to make a profit. Not provide goods/services for free. Reduce rate for family/friends if you want but make sure you're still making a profit. And when I say friends I mean good close friends. Not someone you've only known a few months or someone you ain't seen for years!
 
I have always said, give your "friends" a deal to have them try your product, whatever it may be. If the product is worth the full price, they will get it regardless.
It sounds like you are a doctor or in the medical field in some way. In this case, this can get strange. It's hard to see a friend as a pt, and visa versa. I would refer them to a colleague that your trust, and expect the same back from them...

my reasoning is this- I want to help out a friend any chance I get. I have friends that are contractors, when it came time to finish my basement my buddy quoted 500$ more than most other contractors around my area. I still went with my friend because thats what friends do. I did not expect any sort of discount.
 
Can you afford it? I owned part of a fabrication shop for a couple years. If we had time for a friend's small job, I had them cover cost. Probably wasn't the best policy but it wasn't a big deal.
 
I dont know what business you have, but I think this is relative to any: If they dont specifically ask for a discount, never give one unless its normal business practice.
If this friend does ask, and you have some flexibilty in price that you can substantiate...(example for me was a friend wanted me to install a wired network, I gave him a discount based on him doing portions of the work, and him helping during the install, I rationalized this because his help reduced the labor cost by 1/2, I gave him 40% off of what I charged for labor...)
In my opinion, thats how I would look at it, if there are opportunities for you to save costs give them 40% of that savings....

I wouldnt give discounts just because you know someone or are friends. You have a lot of friends, you could potentially be giving away a lot of money doing that.

What I would do is give discounts for referrrals to your business. So, if someone refers a client to you, I'd give the referrer a discount on their services for directing business your way.
 
it depends on your demand. If you are booked with clients and she would take a spot of a full price client, maybe not. If you have a lot of spots open, then throw them in those spots and give them a 10% cut or free reach-around

i would tell people ur giving them a deal but charge em full price and see if they know the difference. they probably dont, and they will probably tip u cuz u did them a favor lol

My fees are right there on my web site (I'm a Naturopathic Practitioner), so they would know if they are getting a deal or not.

I'm not booked solid so I have room/time for clients and yes, need more clients (just started the business in Sept).
No one knows the prices of all my products I sell so this I can play with the prices a little.

I like the "if they refer you they get a discount" I'll use this one. My Massage therapist does this. Thanks Smurf
I like also don't give a discount unless they ask, but this is where feeling bad comes into play.

There is no issue for me seeing a client who is a friend. I don't do physicals, and I figure if they don't want to share their really personal info with me, they would ask me for a referral instead of wanting me on the consult.

Zwhit, I can and cannot afford it, I get new clients by the week, but the business is still so new, I need more for sure.

Had a client tonight who took advantage of a special I was running for weight loss. She got 30$ off my fee, but ended up buying all her products from me so I made a good amount just on that.
There is also a girl who volunteers at my cat shelter who struggle with obesity, she just joined a gym and came tonight to buy products from me and asked if she can consult with me on weight loss and fatigue. I know this girl makes min.wage and I see her trying so hard to change her life, so I offered her a really reduced rate. For no other reason than I want to help her more than I want the money.

I guess it's going to be a case by case thing. I do have a soft heart and want people to genuinely feel healthy and well, but I also have to keep in mind, it's a business.
When I owed a successful renovation business back in 1994, I was cut throat and didn't give anyone a real break, but that business was all about money and not a passion.

New friends I won't discount my price unless they are sick and financially struggling.

I could be busier, but it's a new business! I feel I am worth it for sure.
I'm really good at what I do and help a lot of people. But it's a word of mouth business so I need to give great service so I get more clients.

what does your friend do for a living?? serve coffee?? write wills?? shovel snow?? Lets suppose instead of them earning $22 hr.. just because its' for you they earn $10 hr for a couple days..

well, nothing hipppish about what I do, but I do have clients all over the US which I use Skype to consult with them.

Spy, my friend is a nurse (not Pdaddy), so she's making some ok coin. Her husband also makes good money, but again, it's more about b/c she's a friend.

It depends on the person.

i think you should hook your friends up to a degree if you have the power to. I've been in plenty of situations where the other person does it for me ,so that's how i approach it myself.

I think with business it's a little different in terms of people mooching. It's more likely to happen in a purely social setting. As long as the people you don't associate with are complete shitheads, i think there's a degree of self awareness when it comes to that.

Don't work for free, but don't charge what you normally charge to the average customer. Friends are always a good way to get other business anyways. if it's an acquitance then maybe you hook them up at a reduced rate the first go (Better than not having a customer at all) and then charge them normal from then on

I think the good karma far outweighs the negative if you can manage it properly and not let get it out of hand. it depends on the field/how much time you'd have to take and if you're losing other clients by helping that person. opportunity cost is a huge factor when it comes to that. More importantly LET PEOPLE KNOW WHEN YOU HOOK THEM UP!! (sorry that's not screaming at you blu, that's just a general rule of thumb). if people don't realize it they won't appreciate it
