I am a Brit, and it seems to be over some guy who was shot who was believed to have shot a police officer, and they returned fire.
But to me it seems like an excuse for people to destroy shit and generally act stupid.

That injured kid doesn't appear to be affiliated with the police, so I guess it is just an excuse to act like assholes.

Police shot and killed an armed drug dealer. This lead to a non-voilent protest, with the scum bags rolling in because they know they could loot the shops and have their fun destroying the city, with an excuse and safety due to a large crowd.

Yep. I'm 4 weeks away from being on the streets myself...but I'm good to get stuck in!
It's all over the news. Shops being set alight, looting, fighting and vandalism. Lots of kids aged 10-19 in gangs raiding the streets, tipping cars over etc
a news reporter got attacked and they flipped the news van over
spreading across the country, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Birmingham, Nottingham and several other places...
Even the charity shop "Oxfam" got smashed up and robbed.
Basically pepole have used the protests to have the opportunity to go crazy and have a wild night. Lots of known criminals are involved and a lot of it is being organised over facebook and blackberry messenger

It started as a reaction to police shooting an armed black guy but the spread of the riots isn't race related just a bunch of opportunist low lives jumping on the bandwagon trying to steal a free tv and some new clothes.
There's a quote up on BBC news from the international reaction section that sums it up quite well. It basically says the looters/rooters aren't avenging a death but rather using it as an excuse

So UK finally got their own LA riots I guess. Thank god there was no video of this shooting, or it'd be 10x worse.

Excuse for looting, these people are poor and just want to steal.
I,m working on London at the moment. Working on the Olympic site. My hotel was in the middle of Monday nights riots. It is just plain and simple. Scum bags! taking advantage and thinking they can loot and steel and vandalise anything they want. They are young teenagers in large groups typically local petty criminals getting together to rob and riot there own local people. Here in London there is a big back lash against these vermin. They are looting/steeling to order.it has nothing to do with race or colour. There mixed groups of black, White and Asian filth.
