Clomid — A Beneficial Anti-estrogen

Clomid is a well-known fertility drug that is sold under the brand name of Clomiphene Citrate, Serophene and Milophene. Originally, Clomid or Serophene is a synthetic estrogen despite of its identity as a member of sex hormones group.

Clomiphene Citrate does not belong to anabolic/androgenic steroids group; its chief role is to stimulate the hypophysis to release more gonadotropins. Gonadotropins are protein hormones that are secreted by gonadotrope cells of the pituitary gland and stimulate faster and higher release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). FSH and LH release resulted in an increase of body’s own testosterone level. Normally, Clomid helps in sustaining the required and normal level of testosterone within 10-14 days of its intake.

Basically, Clomiphene Citrate is a non-steroidal drug known by various names, such as Clomifene, Clomifert and Clomiphene. Used traditionally for the treatment of female infertility cases especially due to polycystic ovary syndrome, the drug is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It is also used in the cases where couple does not prefer to use expensive and invasive fertility treatments, such as IVF. In addition, Clomid is prescribed during an intrauterine insemination procedure.

Like other drugs or steroids, Clomid too has some adverse reactions for the users. Hot flashes, abdominal discomfort, visual blurring, reversible ovarian enlargement and cyst formation are some common side effects of the drug. Besides these, there are also some negative impacts, such as abnormal uterine bleeding, nausea and vomiting, which occur rarely because of Clomid usage. In addition, reversible alopecia or ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome may also occur, though very often.

But how can a fertility drug, like Serophene, be helpful for athletes and bodybuilders. In the bodybuilding world, this drug’s key role is of an anti-estrogen. It not only curtails the effects of estrogen in the body, but also is used to slow catabolism after a steroid cycle.


In bodybuilding or other sports, Clomid is prescribed for its multiple health benefits and less side effects as it is not an anabolic/androgenic steroid. Being an anti-estrogen, the drug helps in restoring the natural production of testosterone by the body. It is mainly prefered because it is a "recovery drug" and is mainly used to overcome from the negative effects of other steroids cycle and is taken at the end of a cycle. However, some of its users report increases production of fluid amount during ejaculation because of Clomid.

Before you stack this drug, having an idea about Clomid dosage is quite beneficial. The common dosage for Clomid is 300mg for day 1; 100mg per day for days 2-11; and 50mg/day for days 12-21. However for nonmedical purposes, the suggested dose of the drug is 50-100 mg/day for 4-6 weeks.

Despite of all the positive and negative effects and the dosage required, one thing is common that whether you’re taking the brand name Clomid or Clomifert or any other generic version of clomiphene citrate, it’s all about the same drug.
