Clean Grip High Pulls

Iv just started the Original Bill Star 5x5, On mondays it says to do "Clean Grip High Pulls". I wondered what exactly they are, the only videos on youtube I can find are RDL to High Pull, Sumo Dead High Pulls and just normal High Pulls.

Are clean grip high pulls just a normal high pull using a grip you would use for power cleans?

Ah looks hard, wish someone could show me in person...

Is it critical to keep the clean grip high pull or could you do any type of high pull?

Yes, you need the grip.

They're not as hard as you think. Just a DL with a toss if you think about it. Just start with about 1/2 the weight your would DL with to get the hang of it. Maybe try 135.

OK, so basically you start a DL but more sat back using your legs more than back, when the bar approaches knee point you explode up and shrug the bar as high as you can whilst pulling with the arms too, then let the bar drop down?

You can use the snatch grip. Not really a hard lift, watch all the videos on youtube and you should get the idea. Another way to explain it is: A deadlift where you explode into a shrug. Make sure you extend all the way onto your toes. It is generally done with heavy weights for low reps (doubles/singles). As this is the start to the oly lifts it does get more technical (e.g., keeping the shoulders ahead of the bar) but don't worry about those aspects at this point.

Also, if you are planning on training the oly lifts, the high pull is a good lift to get your thumbs acquainted with the hook grip.

Start with a High Pull - just hold the bar down in front of you with your grip just wider than your hips and explosively pull the bar high by shrugging you shoulders at the same time.

After you can do this easily then add the pull from the floor. Start this pull with your legs and as you reach the point where you started the high pull, you just transfer the pull to your upper body by thrusting hips forward and shrugging as your back straightens.

Sometimes it's easier to learn Olympic lifts by practising part 2 before part 1.
