your first weight bench

anyone have a shitty ass weight bench that u kept in the basement or whatever? i had a crapola weider joint my first year of H.S. that came with 110 pounds of weights and a barbell, i felt like the man benching that:D

My very first bench was some little shitty one. Complete with the plastic, cement filled weights. I don't even remember how I obtained it, I was pretty damn young. I had it in my garage and basically just used it after I went swimming in the summer. It's kind of funny thinking about it now, but all I used to do were about 5 sets a bench presses and then bicep curls(that's actually like what 1/10th of the people at my gym do now) . I'd follow that up by hitting the heavy bag. Even before that I had that old Hulkamania kit. It came with a jump rope, 2 5lb or 3lb plastic dumbells, a sweatband, 2 wristbands and a sweet audio tape with Hulk Hogan telling you what to do and loaded with motivational sayings. I used to listen to it and workout in the dark in my basement. I have no clue why I did it in the dark. My first real bench was a decent weider olympic set with 310 lbs of international weights. It had a leg curl/extension attachment and a lat/tri pulldown tower attachment. It was a pretty good set for a 7th grader. I kept that in my basement and later in my garage when I added some more equipment.

hell yea i had those cement weights and the bench with the rack that only your head fits in when you lay down.....:D

I remember the old cement weights, they were too fat and took up too much room on the bar so I had to use straps to hang extra weight off the end of the bar.
Trying to squat out of my bench was always fun too.

I had a crappy York bench that would always wobble around all over the place....

....and those plastic covered cement weights - shit - those were the worst!! They would always crack at the seams and all of that white powdery shit would get all over the place....my mom thought I was smoking crack instead of working out....

My first bench.... oh the good old days. I worked out in the equivalent of a YMCA in my town, this club was sponsored by a deceased millionaire who endowed the library, park, and free 9 hole golf course in town.

ANYWAYS - the management relegated the free weights to this room that you had to climb 25 STEEP steps to get to. The room was 20' x 30'. 3 windows that opened. 2 radiators. In the summer - it would reach 90+, no ventilation (even with the windows open). In the winter - 45 (if the radiators kicked on the 90+).

It was heaven.

The two flat benches we had were hand made by guys from the steel mill in the town. 1/2" worth of padding - 10" wide. The BEST part was the supports - they were MAYBE 12" apart. Prison quality. To load up a bar - you put one #45 plate on, slide the loaded side all the way into the support, goto the other side and load a #45 plate - slide the bar back to the middle.

I don't know how many times some newbie moron would come up and not understand the concept of a seesaw.

needsize......i forgot about that, sticking your neck under the bar between those close racks and set up for squats......;)

I remember the Hulkamania set. I still have a picture from when I was like eight or nine, lying on a piece of foam, bench pressing the whole 10lbs with my hulkamania sweet band on.

that has got to be the funniest thing i have ever read on this web site........

i had the cement weights too........ it was great......... i had a DP (fit for life) bench.......... oh how those weights were heavy.

and squats.......... oh those were a power clean and press and then lower it behind my neck.......... so you figure how much weight i could use!!?!?!?!?

man im glad that i was the only one in the room.

I had the POS cement weights too. In fact, I still have em. :D I use them on my super old curl bar. I've been meaning to get a nice weight bench and whatnot, but since I am away at school for most of the year I haven't yet.

Oh yeah, my weight bench at home is also one of the ones where your head barely fits between the supports. :) At least now I have the Weider 315 lb international weight set.

5th grade..

thin medal bench with leg extension and curls on the end...
maybe a 3 pound bar..and sand filled wieghts.. weighing 4.4, 13.5 pounds...and i think 28.2 or something...

it was pretty sweet

Oh yeah. I still have a wopping 80# of mystery cement weight and a hollow, bent, barbell with a crappy aluminum sleeve on it. I used to do some pretty stupid things with it. Like squat to the floor with 80#, reach failure at the bottom, then bend my head down and roll the bar to the floor! At my young age, that 80# could've really f**ked me up!!!!!! :mix: :mix:

me too, till the plastic started to crack and the cement fell out of the weights.

we had two milk crates and a wooden plank.

I still have the metal pipe with solid coat rack bases welded to the botom (must weight about 60lbs) hidden in the shed

that was my dads effort in me trying to lose weight when i was a kid. i guess he didnt want to put much money down......who wouldnt after all the toys i got as gifts and never played with..and al the hobbies i picked up and never continued

many years later i took up training for real......worked many hours a week and ended up with a nice little bench/squat rack, a power rack......and many plates.

DP fit for life. powder coated blue with red sparkle vinyl, YES!

.75" tube steel, could barely put me head between the racks. Cement filled weights, collars with the threaded pin stop. Hell I even had the cable pulldown attachment and the leg extension accessorie. I was the man!

I was 9 years old. I am almost 30. Its still in my parents basement.

The old man comments every now and then that hes gonna pull it out... He'll colapse the damn thing. Dads are allways good for a laugh.

Good thread.

Holy crap...i had the Hulkamania set too!
Can you imagine...maybe that is what got like 1/3 of us started?

Subliminal messages on the tapes?

I remember being younger and trying to do pullovers using a dumbell with cement plates. The weights were held by little red plastic bolts. When doing these pullovers, i cant count the amount of times the weight slipped off and hit me flat in the head or face.
