your favorite book......recommendations

The Kite Runner was great.
The next by that author is Thousand Splendid Suns (haven’t started it yet) and is supposed to be even better.

For those of you interested, i agree with ricco that the kite runner is a great book. it is a simultaneously heart-wrenching and heart-warming story with an emotionally compelling plot. i confess that parts of that novel brought tears to my eyes. yep i was crying like a baby. It really is a beautiful story, a story of love and friendship twisted with tragedy and betrayal. And then in the end redemption. good stuff too is that all the while afghanistan history is relived.
one of my favorite lines from the book, "for you, a thousand times over."

I cryed a few times myself............but don't tell the other boys.

your heart will go out to Hassan in the scene where he gets raped by Assef, you will cry when Amir abandons him..

see that's the thing....there's enough of that crap that goes on in real life that, in my mind, that's not something I would read for leisure. I mean, I totally understand how others appreciate and like drama's and all that, but I'd rather read the funny pages. I just dont like to cry. And if I do cry, I'd rather it be a happy cry than a sad cry.

Plus, I cant pronounce all the names in that book, so it would just frustrate me. LOL

i guess for me happily ever after books tend to be uninteresting and so predictable. i like funny books and watch alot of comedy but when it comes down to it, like you said shit like that happens all the time in real life. and because you know it happens it has a deeper impact on you, they leave a deeper impression on me, they're intriguing, realistic, surprising, unexpected, yet expected and they're stories that i will remember. happy books tend to be uninteresting, fairy-tale perfect and so damn unrealistic to the majority of people.

I guess after days of dealing with people who are dieing due to teh fact that they wont take their bp meds b/c they cant get an erection, having conferences with parents trying to tell them that it's time to withdraw medical intervention from their infant (only child) after mom had to have an emergency hysterectomy, and seeing the aftermath of a guy who attacked a woman with a claw hammer, I've got all the unpredictability I need. And work isnt all shitty, but it's the shitty stuff that leaves such a strong imprint in you, and the stuff you wanna get away from.

I understand what you're saying though. I really do. To each their own.
