Move over, Dr. Phil. Motivational speaker Larry Winget takes no prisoners
By JOANNE RICHARD, TORONTO SUN
"IF YOUR life sucks, it's because you suck." Talk about cutting to the chase! Brassy, ballsy Larry Winget certainly doesn't candy coat anything in his no-holds barred book Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get A Life (Wiley).
"If your business sucks, it's because your customer service sucks. Your delivery of service sucks. Your bosses suck. It's simple -- it's your own damn fault," says Winget, a motivational speaker labelled the "pit bull of personal development." Why are we not surprised that he even looks like one!
"The No. 1 cause of all personal failure is the refusal to take responsibility," says Winget. "We've become a society of blamers, of victims; we even encourage it. Whining is everywhere. We're a sue-happy society."
He's sick of whiners and their wussy, worthless excuses, and is out to put the word 'self' back into self help -- "just where it belongs," he says.
Call it hard-core self-help. Stomping all over conventional self-help with his flashy designer cowboy boots, Winget delivers a slap of reality: Clean up your own mess. Stop expecting the world to rescue you. Fix your own problem.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
Fortune 500 companies fly him in to pump up people to take responsibility for their lives and point them in the right direction to reap personal and financial success. "Service to others is the key to all success, happiness and prosperity in both your personal and professional life."
Whiners drive Winget wingy: "Crap happens so just shut up and go back to work." Stop complaining -- or leave. "I get hired to say what the boss would love to say but is afraid to or can't."
Whether you think Winget's a wing nut or not, this no-excuses kind of guy is incredibly successful and funny. He travels 300 days a year -- almost 30,000 km in one week -- to booked engagements, delivering his "kick-butt approach to a better life" to major groups, associations and companies around the world. "Business improves when the people in the business improve and that everything in life gets better when we get better and nothing gets better until we get better."
Winget is out to remind people that they have the ability to change their lives and to do better and have more. "I am sick of listening to people blame their lousy life on the fact they have ADHD, or they were first-born, or they were breast-fed or bottle-fed ...
"I am sick and tired of listening to fat people blame their genes for their obesity. Chances are they have not been able to fit in their jeans for years. People are fat because they eat too much. Period."
Winget doesn't train or consult -- he's just the speaker: "I leave 'em bleeding and laughing." The internationally-recognized speaker, who was inducted into the International Speakers Hall of Fame in 2002, doesn't pull any punches -- he's loud, "rude, confrontational and funny, that's why I get away with what I say," says Winget, from his Arizona home. "People enjoy people who are true to themselves, even when they don't agree with them."
Just two weeks ago, he spoke to member firms of M Financial Group at their annual meeting in Arizona: "He says it like it is -- he's motivating, energetic and very humorous," says Karyn Hamilton, marketing director, who admits Winget isn't the regular type of speaker they book in terms of appearance and delivery.
"It was a 9 a.m. meeting and he sure woke everybody up!"
Deana Mink, of Rentway, agrees: "He's so good at grabbing you, getting you focused and keeping you awake. There was a ton of laughter and a ton of applause in Las Vegas."
Winget spoke to 1,000 Rentway staff in Vegas in February and scored a 96% in their post-conference survey, says Mink, spokesman for the appliance rental company in the U.S.
BRUTALLY HONEST
Winget says he's brutally honest with everyone -- "that's why I don't have many friends and really don't care." He swears he'd even tell his wife, Rose Mary, the truth if she asked, "Does this make my butt look fat?"
And his sons have always gotten the same dose of reality: "One is a trained killer and the other a fashion designer." Tyler is in the United States Army and just got back from Iraq and Patrick designs jeans.
According to Winget, most of us have complicated life and business way too much, take it way too seriously and that we need to lighten up, take responsibility, be more flexible and keep it all in perspective.
Winget does admit some people are dealt a crummy hand. "People have problems. People get laid off, they get fired, they get downsized, upsized and rightsized ... Some things happen that aren't your fault, but your reaction to those things happening is your fault.
"Pick up the cards, shuffle them and deal yourself a new hand. You are in control. Do not wait. Do not whine," says Winget, adding you have to make good things happen.
Meanwhile, do audiences really hear him? Do they make changes? "I doubt it. I have no delusions."
So like Groucho Marx said: "These are my principles, and if you don't like them, I have more."

Can you condense that into one sentence please?

Here's the meat of the article.....Reader's Digest condensed version.

"IF YOUR life sucks, it's because you suck." It's simple -- it's your own damn fault.

Well i wanted to contribute something useful..

Killer has inspired me

ulcaster.. maybe if you went to a Tony Robbins seminar do you think it would help your situation some?

what a great gig!

he gets to tell people why they don't deliver value, without having any measure of his value to an organization.

All the authority as a speaker, with none of the responsibility for the results.

I am so jealous.
