Decided since my son brought home his report card with all A's and lowest percent was a 97 that I would do something special for him for his B'day on Saturday. Sooooooooooooooo......

After being the 3rd person in line at one of the Wal-Farts last night at 9:00 and then the prick fuck manager deciding that since there were 26 of us at 11:00 pm that we should do a lottery and not getting my number picked, then going to another Wal-Fart and finding out that they already drew their numbers. I decided to take one more chance and went to Target this morning at 5:00 a.m. to wait it out..... when I got there I was number 7 in line so I was assured an XBOX. 8:00 a.m. the doors open and I plunk down $450 or so for the XBOX, 2 games, and an extra controller. I also got a free cheap ass XBOX chair.

Got it home and had to make sure it worked and all that good stuff....... and wow does it ever. The graphics and speed on this thing are outstanding. Details, details, details...... damn Madden Football seems like you are there and the Project Gotham Racing game is way cool too. Now all I have to do is put it back in the box like it came and wrap that sucka up.

Amazing what we do for our kids.

I will guarantee you that they are going to develop and continue to develop some kick ass games for these things. Shit the XBOX has a faster Pent III than my damn puter I am using right now. Parental Control feature is cool too, plays DVD's, CD's.... you can copy your own music and play it during any game, 64 MB memory. It's tough to beat man.

My parents took time to develop my skills and just be with me which I value more than anything they ever bought me.

Hardware features mean jack-shit without games. The N64 looked nicer than the PS1, so did the Dreamcast ... yet the PS1 had tons more games and was way more popular. "Faster" doesn't mean anything. A 300mhz RISC processor beat a 800mhz CISC processor (like the p3). You can't compare Mhz .. that's like comparing different drugs based on MG's.

And here's the marketshare 2 years from now :

PS2 ~50%
GC ~25%
Xbox ~25%

I guarantee it. Besides a few first party titles, a developer would be STUPID not to do a PS2 version of their game. It's already got a huge installed user based in comparison to the Xbox. Publishers want a PS2 title, then if there's time/money you can do a Xbox port as an afterthought. GC is entirely different, cause it caters to a different audience and Nintendo makes the best games for their platform anyway. They don't need 3rd parties.

There are Hundreds of PS1 games for me to pickup dirt cheap.
I'm happy for a couple of years then I'll buy a PS2-3 when they are dumped on the market...

Don't get me wrong. I've been there in the "Gotta have the new shit" mindset.
 
I used a Mac for years. The problem with mac is the industry supports PC so much more. I got tired on having to go Mail-order when I wanted a new game or some other piece of software.

Please don't question how much time I spend with my family since you know nothing about me. As of right now I coach my oldest son's baseball team (we practice 2 times a week and play one game a week..... Saturday morning) I also am an assistant coach for my youngest son's tee-ball team (we practice once a week and play one game a week..... Saturday afternoon). So that pretty much takes up Tuesday night, Wed night, Thursday night and all day Saturday. And they both have serious skills....baseball, basketball, football,,,,,, you name it they can do it..... and oh ya they also are very smart and both love to read...... in case you are wondering my oldest has to read to either to myself or my wife for a minimum of 10 minutes each night.

He has had only 1 B in the last 2.5 yrs and the rest A's. If the grades go down so does the extra-curricular activities.

This is ridiculous.

Microsoft has resources Sony can't even approach.

What does that mean? it means Microsoft can negotiate contracts with all the top developers, pay them way more than Sony can dream of, and force them to sign exclusivity clauses that there will be no other versions of the games except the Xbox version.

If you're a developer, you don't care about installed base. You care about revenue, just like every corporation. And Microsoft can give you much more than Sony can.

Microsoft will dominate this market just like they do the PC software market.

As far as Mac users - it was Microsoft that saved Apple from bankruptcy with a $150million cash infusion.

It was Apple founder Steve Jobs (not that "evil" Bill Gates) who started a failed enterprise called neXt, then sold it to Apple (himself) for $400million. And right before he did that, he took all of his employees' stock options away, so they got nothing, while he pocketed $400million.. Gates, meanwhile, has never taken a salary above $640K.

Don't know about all that shit and I am not going to argue with you...... I am just stating that from what I saw the XBOX beat the shit out of the PS2. I think they are suppossed to have something like 40- 45 games out by the end of Dec.

The other thing that I have heard... not seen..... is that the PS2 sucks playing DVD movies.

Anyway only time will tell..... and I don't bet against Gates or Microsoft.

No, it doesn't work that way. First I'd like to say I am a developer and we make PS2,Xbox and GC games so I'm not biased towards either hardware. If I had it my way, I'd want the Xbox to win because it's sooo much easier to work with.

Now on to the good stuff. 50% of the video game market is in JAPAN. Microsoft will never, ever, ever have that market. Japanese are extremely loyal to their own country, and a lot of Japanese developers are simply refusing to work on Xbox titles.
The japanese like really really weird games. Stuff that wouldn't sell 10 copies in North America, sells like hot cakes in Japan. You NEED Japanese developers to make your platform a success. The PS2 also has a huge head start (god knows when the Xbox will be released in Japan).

If you're buying a gaming system to play DVD's, then you have some issues. Chances are if you're into DVD's then you already have a player or two at home. You gotta pay extra $ to get the DVD playing capability on the Xbox btw .. it's free with the PS2.

Those #'s I posted aren't something I pulled out of my ass. They are numbers published by independant research firms who try to predict these things and are usually quite good at it.

The PS2 also has the advantage of backwards compatibility. You can play the 2000+ PS1 games on it and they'll look even better with bilinear filtering and faster load times. That's quite an advantage for the 90 million PS1 users out there.

Now the real kicker. Sony just invested a shit load of cash into Squaresoft .. makers of Final Fantasy games. These games sell more than anything else, and guess what - it ain't coming to Xbox. Neither is GT3 ... there's a rumour that MGS2 is coming to Xbox, but nothing's confirmed. There are NO original titles on the Xbox. All of them are rehashes. There's no Xbox equivalent of MGS2 or Devil May Cry or ICO. A few sport games, one fighter, and a first person shooter. Woohoo.

I showed some of my friend's the difference between Xbox and PS2, graphics wise and most couldn't tell the difference. They just wanna play the games - and the PS2's got all other current platforms beat on that.

Personally I don't care which you buy, cause my company will be making money either way :D

Hey it's all good. I love video games, have loved them for as long as I can remember and now I do it for a living. I work on Xbox stuff too, so whatever floats yer boat :)

I do agree with you though that the xbox "probably" won't make a huge splash in japan.......but I disagree with you on whether or not that really matters. I"m glad an "american" company is getting into the industry..........one that who's bottom line is NORTH AMERICAN sales. I can't tell you how disappointed I was that sega ditched the DC despite having somewhere near 10 million units here in the states..........that showed almost utter contempt for the North American market. Japanese sales do matter though. As I said the Japanese compromise roughly 50% of the international console market. As long as Xbox is not #1 in Japan, it won't be #1 in the world. The PS2 does have "killer apps" which the Xbox doesn't (yet). It's just a bit late that's all. I loved the DC too .... very sad it's almost dead. The Japanese who have thrown their support behind Xbox are only doing it partially. Basically you'll see a PS2 version of a game, then an Xbox version of the same game 6 months down the road. The Xbox will never be #1 ... but maybe the next one will be. I'd love nothing more than for the Xbox to "win", so that I can stop losing so much sleep on the nightmare which is the PS2 :)

The graphical interface (Windows, without the name) was actually invented by Xerox in their Palo Alto Research Center in the mid 1970's. Xerox also invented the mouse, as well as Ethernet, the dominant networking implementation.

How do you think these guys feel today? Neither Jobs nor Gates invented this software.

Well, I think if microsoft turns out to be #1 in the states, they'll be pretty damn happy with that, even happier if they're #1 in Europe. I honestly don't see microsoft doing anything out of their way to accomodate the jap market UNLESS it doesn't alter in any way their North American sales. North America will be #1 to microsoft for sure, then they'll look at japan. Do you think the jap game companies will thumb their noses down at the number one console in North America??? I think not.......it might not be AS important to them as japan, but it's very important to them nonetheless. By the way fresh, what company do you work for??

And now its happening in ppl's houses. Well that was a nice 800$ you just spent on a bundle only to get a defective piece of hardware.....thats anotherthing, noones mentioned the fact that you MUST buy a bundle to get an x-box b4 christmas. Thats 450 for the system, 200 for 3 games, and 100 for a mem card and an extra controller....before tax.

I didn't spend $800 on a bundle and did NOT have to buy a bundle...... but it would be kinda useless not to buy a couple games don't ya think? I could have walked out with just a console for 3 bills. Don't know where you got your info but seems to be wrong.

Quite simply not true.

Microsoft made a token investment in Apple as part of a lawsuit settlement.

Apple has had a sizeable cash reserve for many years, and has never approached bankruptcy.

I GAURANTEE Metal Gear SOlid 2 kicks all of the Xbox games many times over. I had no interest in it, but now that Ive played it, I fucking love it. Its addictive and cool as hell. If I had money Id go but it, being broke sux

Right now, Final Fantasy is exclusively for PS2, they might put the online version out on all systems, but not FFX or any others like what is out. Im expecting Final Fantasy 10 to be the best fucking game in years. I want that thing so damn bad!!!

Jobs and his crew were 'inspired' from what they saw at the Smalltalk demo Xerox put on. They still had to build the architecture from the ground up with tons of new innovations, both with software and hardware.

Gates and his theives had access to the Macintosh code and programming interface since they were supposed to be creating programs for Macs. But nooo.. that Harry Potter look-alike straight jacked the evolved concept and put out a wack version of Mac.. aka Windows.

Blaa blaa. It's all about THE GAMES, damn it! PS2 has ie. GT3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and soon Dino Crisis 3, Virtua Fighter 4, just to name a few. PS2 is THE shit. It has always had and always will have the best games and that's what counts.

Now excuse me while I beat the living shit out of my Gran Turismo 3 with the GT3-force wheel :)

At any rate I wasn't too impressed with the Xbox at all, it dosn't look any different than the PS2 and the controller really sux ass. I mean what were they thinking?

I've played DVD's on my PS2 and its just as good as my DVD player. Only I don't have a remote.

Windows is getting on my nerves too as an IT I can't stand its unpredictibility I think my next OS will be Linux.

I believe they did that to kill Apple's OS, which was supposed to be as stable as Mac OS and work on both PC and Mac, luckily for MS Apple was going bankrupt at the time...that's what I understoon as their reasoning anyway.

My source for Gates's $150million dollar infusion to Apple is the founder of Vermeer Technologies. (They developed and sold "Front Page" to Microsoft). Because of his negotiations with Microsoft's seniormanagement, he had some real insights into the Jobs/Gates relationship.

Remember John Sculley, Apple's CEO for a while? He damn near ruined the company. His failure is widely known. According to the founder of Vermeer, it was post-Sculley, when Jobs appraoched Gates for money. It was not lawsuit driven.

Do you have a better source? I'd really like to hear it.

They don't say "when" it'll happen. By the time it's out for Xbox, PS2 owners will be playing the sequel. Xbox will always just be an afterthought. You'll never see a game first come out for Xbox then for PS2. It doesn't make business sense to shaft yourselves out of the possible 15million PS2 owners. PS2 has a had start and mindshare - and that's what matters in this industry.

NFL Fever .. wow.. Midway sucks anyway. Go and seriously check out MGS2 , you'll be blown away and your Xbox will look like a piece of turd. And there'll be FAR more PS2's in 2004 than 34m. There were 90+ million PS1's in 4 years. PS2 has got the games, and it's got them now. If you wanna play games TODAY, a PS2 is the way to go. If you like the promise of future games, then get a Xbox .. in the meanwhile I'll be enjoying my PS2 and PS1 games :D

But as I said I don't care either way. I work on Xbox titles too. So go ahead and buy those as well :D
 
I read today in USA today that Microsoft expects to LOSE at least $100 on each console sold and has projected/budgeted for $1 Billion in losses until profitability on the X-Box in 2004.

Ya I read that too........ $100 per console..... I wonder how much they make on each game sold?

No prob about the "shit" aka debate..... it's all good. I was throwing around a lot of shit too... Sorry if I offended you.... I do get the "know it all" thing going with the best of them. Like water on a ducks back. I am seriously missing baseball tho. And watching the 8 - 10 yr olds kid pitch and 5 - 6 t-ball games isn't doing it LOL. I mean they are fun to watch but...........

Every console loses money. If they charged what the console actualy cost to manufacture, nobody would buy it. They (MS) make it back in games. EVERY game that gets published on the XBox has to pay royalties to MS. Same with Sony and the PS2 or Nintendo and the GC.
