Job hunting as we speak market here seems decent so I am hoping it is not to long that I am out of work. I actually wouldn't mind going back to school but we will see.

I'm an Executive Assistant/ProjectCoordinator: I have OVER 6 years of experience... started at an early age. I definitely don't plan to do this forever but I'm seeking something fairly stable so that I can go back to school. But you know, everything happens for a reason. So I know & have faith that something better will come along. You know the saying... Door closes, another opens. :qt:

That sucks Qt.. the good thing is, you can nap! naps are awesome!

I get 24 days total of vacation/sick days/personal days.

4 Undergrad (Co-op'ed - jobs are handed to you, or you pick em out of a pool, nothing more is involved but a resume faxed and an interview - I don't ever plan to work in the general job market, this is to fund my undergrad)
4 Med school (if I get in)
3-6 years residency (6 for surgery, 3 for general)

Even for medicine you have go go through the application process but there's so much demand that you'll get offers thrown at you when you come out...except if you're too too specialized. I know a neurosurgeon who hasn't found a job 'in Canada' after a year or so.

Did you study at U of T?

Nope not U of T Please become a GP I can't find a family Dr. in this city for the life of me. ;)

Of course not having any work experience other than clinical research (which is truly not a JOB experience) I probably do not have a proper assessment in mind regarding the working world. But in terms of regular jobs, the archetypes I have in mind - run of the mill office jobs, I wouldn't see myself as doing anything significant. It feels like you're being exploited to make someone else's pocketbook fatter...if course that happens with everything doesn't it?

You serious? All GP's want to work in Toronto, not just because of the research opportunity but the clientele etc. Are all of the GPs you're looking for overbooked? I don't know what I'm going to be, GP is mundane I hear by some med students...and my own family doctor. Although surgery is wayyyy too demanding and dangerous (to the patient), I hate the idea of a patient dying under my watch. But apparently the docs get used to it. We'll see during clerkships/observerships/rotations

Yup most family docs here are over booked and not accepting new patience.

Wow, they weren't kidding about that shortage...I hate to think what's going on in rural areas? That's where they want to send their new GPs.

Well even then, if they need more doctors why are they making admission criteria so restrictive? Going into med is a lot of pressure, you gotta balance your research, extra curriculars and a B+ would ruin your GPA...and oh god the MCAT. I guess they don't wanna pay for more doctors ;). Someday our public health care will be no longer due to the vast number of clientele, and that ageing population.

Speaking of an ageing population, perhaps when you go back to school you can head into pharmaceuticals ;). Not only will it be huge (facilitating the need for job hunting) but you can get all the gear you want :))

Sucks that doctors are being plugged by people who are complaining of common colds and are trying to get antibiotics from em. Most doctor visits are unnecessary.

So you're without a GP...isn't that kinda dangerous?

I might join the "searching" force soon. I'll either leave becasue they dont pay me enough, or they'll fire me because I dont do anything. The part that worries me is that I have no money saved, I'll be homeless.

I know what you mean.... we learn the HARD way though. They'll give me one month severance here & plus they have to pay me for my vacation days which I didn't use. That should hold me up for a while...

Hmm I'm not hearing many good things about the job market out there ;)...I never never have really. Should I just stick to professional occupations? Most doctors I talked to love their job.

That is a dam good idea. ;) Sadly math science were never strong for me.

I have a gyno here and go for yearly check ups, but I never go to a regular MD unless I am dying. I am kinda stuborn like that.

with the possible exception of urology most surgeons lives are their work. It might be interesting but healthcare is moving towards having surgeons specialise in types of operations and the lifestyle is not as fun ue to the hours

as a GP some o the work might be mundane but you have the option of specialising in something and doing it once a week (dermatology, bronchoscopy, surgery, ER/Traumatology) a much better work schedule and you get to be a primary source of healthcare, you do the first diagnosis....and get to know the patients better....

Thanks Danielson. You're an MD?
Oh yeah, I've seen a surgeon/surgery resident's lifestyle first hand. It will definately suck if you don't have a passion for what you're doing. We'll see what happens, I'm still 18 so I got a lot of time...well not quite.
