Specific Brand name school supplies?

Damn! I buy school supplies EVERY fucking year that I never see.. fucking ever, that my kids never use. Yet they want Specific brand names.. when its going to other students who don't have their supplies

Im all about helping.. Have no problem with that. But don't fucking expect me to pay three times the amt for another kid.

Wha? You have to buy a specific brand of loose leaf paper and pens or something?

hell yea..

specify the brand of colors they want, the brand of notebooks they want, the brand of pens they want... shall i go on

pisses me off

esp when my kids bring back fucking notebooks that I didn't buy.

This isn't a fucking school supply pool.. I paid 4 fucking dolloars for a notebook I expect my kid to be using it.

pisses me off

damn, things like this make me never ever to have kiddos.
i want to be a step-dad though, marry the mom when the kid is like 14 or so

I can't wait until my oldest kid starts school. Its about 3 weeks away. He's the guy you scared on Skype.

I'm still thinking of what he should wear on his first day. I'm thinking gangsta rapper image would go over well in JK.

So brand names are more important now than the substance of what they're supposed to learn...
no wonder so many kids don't know shit nowadays.

thank you for the reminder. I need to raid my company's office supply closet for fall semester supplies.

Thank god the printer is near my cube; easier to take a pack of paper (j/k).

I'm glad you feel that way. I'm sending you the psych bill. Frosky has been the name of the monster under his closet every since that conversation.

PUBLIC SCHOOL?!?!? WTF?! That ridiculous. I hope that my experiences aren't that bad.

Did you know that you CAN buy a wig with dreads that fits a 4 year old?

Fuck that shit, Frisky. Get generic shit. If they don't like it then they can go fuck themselves.

Wow. Sensing some rage there.

BTW, what's your interest with anal sex?

I don't remember any of my teachers ever requesting specific brand name supplies. When the kids are in elementary school, a pencil is a pencil...I don't think it matters what the name on it is.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. Kiss my ass, lumping every public school teacher into that. Classy.

I guess the close to $300 ALREADY I have spent out of MY pocket for school supplies for NEXT year doesn't mean a damn thing. I have ZERO problem buying things for my kids - all 30+ of them. What parents want to buy, fantastic. If they want to buy extras, wonderful. But *I* still supply a lot - because I WANT to.

Additionally, I ask for specific colors and type of folder (with pockets and brads) so we can use them for different subjects. It makes it VERY easy for the kids. If they bring in something different, no biggie. I supply what they need or we make do with what the child brings in.

Bu then again, I am just a dumb, selfish public school teacher. What the hell do I know?

I'm not fucking lumping every public school teacher into the same class.

NOBODY fucking tells you to spend X amts of dollars on supplies every year. I have plenty of friends that are teacher.. yep I sure do and they do it becaue they want to. I can't see why the hell it makes a difference if i get X brand or fucking Elmers glue as long as they have supplies RIGHT.

Don't fucking Assume I dicount Public school TEACHERS.. or else My kids would be attending a public school. I have never spoken ill of them other than to say that they fucking demand more of the parents because the state fucks them which I for one admit they do. I pay my damn taxes, and vote fucking YES to every increase that supports raising you fucking pay raise. Don't sit here and assume I am against you just the fucking teacher that demands I spend three times the amt on school supplies that I don't fucking see. I've done this 5 damn years in a row with my son.. You aren't his damn teacher RIGHT.. so don't assume I am puting YOU in this fucking class.

Im sick and tired of you fucking teachers getting all pissy becuase you don't fucking get treated fair. I support all of you, not once have I ever said NO to a tax increase. If you fucking hate your job that much, if its that much of a burdon on you just fucking quit. I work 12 damn months out of the year and spend umteen amts of money maintianing my own fucking education yet you don't ever hear me bitching as much as you do.

and you know what get fucking pissed.. you fucking jumped the high horse on this one sweetie... now you can kiss my ass

yep there is rage..

when my damn son is denied a fucking winter jacket because it doesn't FIT regulation standards so he has to do without cause i can't find one.

you damn right it pisses me off...

Its getting insane what is requested/demanded by the schools.

and before you get in a hissy daisy, this isn't saying YOU demand the school regulation. Wait till you are in my fucking shoes and have other obligations, two fucking kids.. supplying for them and helping the others that can't get their supplies, which btw I send extra EVERY FUCKING YEAR, and still get the demand that it can be no other than X brand.

A damn pencil is a pencil, a crayon is a crayon a notebook is a notebook.

they took away X clothes for a reason.. yet they demand name brand school supplies. I don't freaking get it.

are you here.. in Louisiana..? South louisiana..? Excuse me for not fucking clarifying that I hear this bitching year round.

I am bitching because its demanded that we get name brand, etc

I don't care that they request X amts of supplies or colors etc.. but to specify the exact name brand it insane.

You jumped on my thread assuming shit immediately... OK so you are not unhappy.. whatever.

I'm seriously sick and tired of the demands the public schools have made HERE!

I can give a care less if they like me or dislike me .. as long as my kids get the teaching due to them what does it matter what brand notebook they take notes in?

If this doesn't apply to YOU then don't get all frazzled about it.

i don't talk to him that way

I am just pissed cause someone told me to kiss their ass and assumed I don't give a fuck about public school system

You need to clarify then. Because your obsenity-ridden tirade came off as against ALL teachers. Every post stated the general plural .... as in "you teachers", "fucking teachers in public schools", etc etc.

And of course I am going to take offense to that - it is something I feel very passionate about.

Am I pissed.. hell yes I am! I've battled this shit for five freaking years. I didn't pin point a damn teacher NO i didnt' cause thus far every single one has done the same.

i have two children in public school and have on numerous ocassions have had to go back and get X brand for the sake of the teacher.

OK so YOU are not in that LUMP. Excuse me for saying PUBLIC schools and lumping you in this damn class

BUT NOT FUCKING ONCE DID I SAY KISS MY ASS DAISY GIRL... YOU are a public school teacher

BUT Now YOU CAN kiss my ass. I won't kiss up to anyone NO matter who you are.

Frisky said:

I am not asking you to kiss my ass. Why would I want that? When did I ask for that? Just because I am a teacher does not mean you should somehow kiss the ground I walk on.

I told you to kiss my ass in a "pissy way" - not a "oh I am a god, kiss my ass, I am better than you" way. And the fact that you used the general plural so abundantly is the reason for that pissy-ness.

If you use the general plural to refer to a group of people, you are bound to annoy someone and get them riled up. Just like if I said that single moms are a bunch of whores because they got knocked up without being married. (Do I feel that way? HELL NO. It was an example.)

I don't think I should be treated any differently just because I am a teacher. I made a job choice - like everyone else - and I do not regret it one bit. I absolutely adore my job. There are good things and bad things about the job - like every other job out there.

Just like i hear the reference OIL FIELD TRASH.... i work in the oil field.. but fuck those who say it right!

I do my job, I respect my work and I don't do the shit most do.. I don't place myself in that class

every job had the bad and the good... sometimes sure we jump the gun and don't pin point specific people but that doesn't mean everyone in that position is bad.

There are bad Christians, bad Government officals, Bad Presidents, Bad Mom, Bad Dads.. etc. If the statement doesn't apply to YOU then just make the statement that hey I do what I can but don't tell me to kiss your ass...

and I know you didn't mean kiss my ass in a suck up way, the way you said it pissed me off more

Do this.

Find the brand you normally buy and price out the goods and say this is what I can contribute with this paticular brand if you want to make up the rest to buy the type you want then go for it.

200 - 1 says they'll take what you send.

I know how you feel Frisky. One of my boy's teacher told us we needed to buy a pack of pencils, a pack of blue pens, and a pack of red pins. The kicker was, when he brings them to school he's not to use them. Instead, they are put in a community box for all to share. Isn't that great. So now I'm not only paying for my son's supplies but also whole fucking class.

Wow, interesting thread. Anywho, I know that my kiddo's teacher requested specific brands for her to bring as well. But it was not for the whole class or anything. My daughter's school is very mixed both financially and racially, so they try to get all the kids to bring the exact same school supplies so that there is no "Johnny has a cooler folder than me" or "Susan's trapper keeper rocks way more balls than mine" kinda stuff happening. But the teachers tend to choose very middle of the road brands so that the cost isn't too high. I would be pissed though if they were doing this "pooling" of supplies thing. We have very high taxes in my area. Not to mention our schools are overcrowded already and they refuse to build or expand. And then of course there is the whole "racial balance" thing. Basically, we tried to get my daughter into a school that is about three blocks from the house not only because it is close but has been ranked one of the best schools in the area. However, the school district lines dictated that she was supposed to attend a school that is about 5 miles away. Our district has an "open campus" policy that says you can send you child to any school you want. But, if by sending your child to a different school than you true district appointed school it upsets the racial balance of either school, you will be denied open campus. So basically, my daughter has to go to a less quality school now because she is white. Reverse racism at it's best right there. "Sorry, you daughter is caucasion and her not attending this school would upset the racial balance." Fucking liberal pussies. Race should not even be a factor. The better school had open seats still whereas the school she was forced to stay at is overcrowded. How does that make fucing sense? I fucking hate my town. Thanks a lot girls. Now I am pissy.

Gab, you must live in MA or somewhere with desegregation, that is some dumb shit. I lived there for a few years and when I heard about that I was all WTF.

most teachers are morons that weren't so hot at using school supplies their first time around.

Now it's payback time.

Public schools in Cajun country. When I lived there they made the kids wear uniforms.

my son goes back to school on the 31st or whatever and i still dont have a list of supplies that he needs....thinking i'll go this weekend and buy what ever

My son couldn't wear a jacket i bought because it had a little Nike check under the collar... wtf? Yet he could wear his Nike shoes.

I try to stay away from the school when they do crap like this cause I'll just lose it. I have a hard time holding my tongue, so I send the kids dad to talk to the teachers when they pull crazy shit.

Same uniform, now they can wear blue pants and white or green shirts too.

One HS I went to wouldn't let me wear red laces in my docks. Crip/blood thing.
Another HS I went to sent my home cause I had my hair up in liberty spikes. Said I couldn't come back if I kept it like that. Too nit picky for sure.

Also on supply lists, they recomend brand names cause some brands are crap. For instance they always say Friskars sicissors. Some of the cheap ones dont cut for crap.

Also, 99% of parents who bitch about teachers, wouldn't last a month teaching 30 kids.

I never said teaching was easy. But trust me Buying X brand over Y brand won't make teaching any easier.

My son is hard on his supplies no matter what I buy, I am replacing notebooks, folders etc every 6 weeks.

i have no idea what to buy....i mean i know the basics like he needs scissors,#2 pencils, eraser, folder, but what else..should i do colored crayons or reg crayons? both? am i forgetting any thing does a 1st grader need notebooks? i have 2 weeks to buy all this stuff and no list...
they just started having parents buy supplies a few years back here..i guess its not as bad as it sounds but they have lists that you have to go by..why not buy cheap pencils the kid is going to break them any ways.
we also have to supply snacks too here because some kid who was nut allergic shared his snack with another kid who had nuts and then almost died-actually might have i am not sure..but this school thing is getting mighty expensive every year...i am not liking it..150/yr for bus 150/per sport or activity, school snacks, lunch money, school clothes and such.....i think it gets worse each year

They put out lists specific to each grade at Walmart here, and when you go for orientation... which get this.. Every damn year the teacher gives another list adding certain things and then taking some things off...

But if you wait till thursday then you are stuck shopping that night because School starts on Friday.

They also include a generic type list with the basics at the end of the school year... they don't do that for you guys?

I'd just get the basics now, make sure they have what they need for the first day.. pencil, crayons, markers, notebooks, folders, etc

no we did not get a list...i dont even know who his teacher will be..the priciple sent home notes on the last day of school saying that we would recieve a letter in july with the list and with our childrens teachers name...well here it is august and no list.i called the school and it is closed since when does the school close? i thought someone would be there like usual.the city i live in had a lot of problems with the tax bracket and were in the middle of deciding what to cut...they wanted to cut teachers but i found out they stopped the city workers over time instead so they could hire more teachers???? this place is a joke but any ways the school dept called a week ago to remind me about bus money and i asked about all of this stuff and the lady i spoke with said my sons school is still hiring so they are not sure where he will be placed and she was sure i would get the notice "fairly soon"...our only walmarts around are in New Hampshire so they only do there schools no mass schools!

uh, excuse me, not to intrude on this cute little american edu-domestic, but...why dont your schools just buy a heap of stationary stock and sell it in bundles from within the school in the first place...youd likely get it cheaper that way, as well as making life easier (ie give your kid $15 or whatever it costs for their complete list and get them to take it to school) ...or have a bookroom, like every other school ive been to. why do you guys make it so hard?

also, frisky, youre a nut - make sure you superglue your shoes to your feet before you go to any of those meetings ;) before you go to jail ;)

Heck I don't know but I bet if they did do that they'd try to profit off of it.. LOL

Last year they decided to do school issued Jackets, plain windbreakers, of course I bought each of my kids one and then mid year found the same jacket at a school uniform shop for nearly half price. LOL

lmao@ superglue my shoes. My temper has gotten me in some strange situations.. YIKES. But I'm alot better now than I was in my younger days... I can't believe some of the shit I did back then.

well so long as the price matched the walmart price, then i dont see a problem with that. it just seems like so much drama for such little things...

i remember being such a pragmatic schoolkid...i couldnt be arsed going all the way to the shop to buy stationary, so id just go to the bookroom and get it all from there during recess. some things just never change, i pull the same thing today :D

Yes they would, it's not that hard. My sister and Mom are / were teachers, they're not magical people.

Stop believing the hype.
aint no hype here Matty. One year I was the volunteer art teacher for my kids class. Art is one of those budget casulties.
Yes, it is a tough job. I don't think you personally could hack it.
Also, how many public schools have you attended there Matty? You have a fierce hatred of them, you must have extensive experience.

OK, I can run a company of 115 adults but not 30 kids. Logical. :)

I know some idiot teachers. Amazingly, they can hack it. Somehow, I think I could do it even if I sustained a brain injury.

I did my time in public schools for 8 years, siblings went all 12. Mom and sis taught public schools. In our family there is 100+ years of classroom experience on both sides of the desk, all in public schools except for teh 5 years I did private / boarding.

I hate public schools because I see what the alternatives are, and I know they are better. And more cost effective. I'd rather run a taco stand.

Any more questions, Tiger? :)

Your first sentence sums it up. 30 children are nothing like 115 adults. Nothing. NO FUCKING THING. Serious shit bor.
I think you have the capability to do it, but I think you would want to hang yourself after 30 days. Now, maybe where you live the schools suck monkey balls, there are plenty of crappy schools out there, there are plenty of good ones too. The number one hinderance/benefit to a childs education isn't really the school it's the home life.
You mom, sister, granny and grampy teaching does nothing for your ability to teach, so please don't use that for one of your qualifications, I was pretty clear I was talking about you personally.

You just want to hang on to your beliefs because they are yours and it is what you are comfortable with believing. You'd have to reconsider a lot about yourself and your kid(s) of you admitted that teaching in public schools is a joke. This is why your arguments have degenerated to "Because I don't think you could". And that's fine, believe what you want, but understnd your entire argument could be summarized as "Because I don't think you could".

Maybe it was hard for you. And that's cool, some stuff is hard for me too. Like that Rubik's cube, used to wear me out.

Anyway, here is some evidence to dispute your contentions. Evidence is what you did not use in any of your posts.

Over the last three years, the city of NY has fired 3 teachers out of 72,000 for incompetence. Three. Less than 1/100 of 1%.

Since my sister started teaching 5 years ago (in a very wealthy Long Island district) no one in her district has been fired. That would be 0%.

A monkey can "hack it".

But your mind seems to be made up, so we can agree to disagree.

1. My mind is made up. Opinions are formed from experience, and my experience with public schools in my area has been good over all. As I already said, there are good schools as well as bad schools. Maybe NY doesn't have any good schools, from what I've seen, inner city schools are worse than in the suburbs. I live in a small quite low crime area, therefore schools here will be different than a school in NYC.

Can we agree on that?

Also on supply lists, they recomend brand names cause some brands are crap. For instance they always say Friskars sicissors. Some of the cheap ones dont cut for crap.

I actually took the "Fiskars" brand scissors off my list last year. I thought it was stupid to have one certain brand on there. While they DO cut better, I teach 4th grade. We don't do that much cutting - not much arts and crafts. I HATE wasting time on artsy stuff. I only get my kids a few hours a day, I would rather spend the time on more useful stuff. Whether or not they can make a pumpkin for halloween means zero to me - whether they understand basic concepts DOES mean something to me.

For this year, I actually took off lined paper, pencils, pens and erasers. I can get them from the school (my school provides them, but not everyone is so lucky). I would rather parents spend money on things that my school DOESN'T provide - folders, binder, spirals. I know most parents will buy those things anyway, but I am not asking them to do it. I end up buying a crap load of stuff anyway. I provide all the crayons, colored pencils, rulers, etc - if a child has their own, great. If not, no biggie, that is what I am there for.

As far as "bundling supplies", my school looked into that for next year. It ended up that Office Max (or Office Depot, I can't remember) was going to GOUGE us on price. It just financially didn't make sense - it was cheaper to buy things individually. Weird.

should i do colored crayons or reg crayons? both?

I've been around the block a few times, but I don;t know the difference between these two items .......

I'll check my school's 1st grade list, then post it up for you. Chances are, your son's will be very different, but you can at least get an idea.

Okay, here goes, 1st grade list from my school:

36 #2 pencils
1 box 24-count crayons
1 12-inch ruler
glue sticks
1 pair Fiskars scissors (that damn company must have the lock on elem schools, lol)
4 erasers
1 box colored pencils

Here are extra, non school supply items I know teachers in my school LOVE to get:
liquid soap
baby wipes
hand sanitizer
paper towels
sandwich bags - to store supplies in desk, any brand that closes
tissues

I always get confused because teachers want "certain" folders, etc
with the pockets inside, without the pockets inside.
The only brand that i definately get is crayola crayons....those are the best and i dont thiink the others are non toxic and they stink too
and i save things from year to year. At the end of the year when they come home and bring their scissors etc magic markeers, i put them up so they can use them the next year....those little plastic boxes with the lids....my kids have enough of them
pencil bags or whatever those little things are that go in the notebooks so they can carry pencils and pens in...i save those
even glue
i try to save as much as i can cuz in the past, that crap has got expensive
It helps ALOT if you take inventory of what your child brings home at the end of the year...because if the oldest one dont use it, one of the others will

Honestly, there is little place in the gen ed classroom for MOST art projects. Especially in higher elem grades. There is no reason I need to have 4th graders make pumpkins, ghosts, stockings, etc for holidays. I see WAY too many people doing things like this.

To me, it is hard to justify spending so much time making cards, cutting, coloring when most of the kids do not understand basic math concepts or cannot comprehend a short reading passage. These kids need to know how to read and understand, perform basic math functions, and write a well put together paragraph. Making a pumpkin? Not necessary.

If you wrap art into educational topics, then that is 100% different. In fact, we are studing Mexico next year for part of the year, and I plan on having the kids make some art projects - AFTER we learn about the historical aspect of why these items are being made. I HATE doing art projects with no educational purpose.

Doing art just for the sake of doing art during the educational day is not what I am there for. I am not an art teacher, I cannot effectively teach art. Yes, I can tell the kids to color, cut, draw and glue. But that is it. In my classroom, that is not teaching, that is filling time - because I am not qualified to *teach* art. And that is NOT what I am there for. The kids at my school go to art once a week - THAT is where they get true art projects and learn about art history (as much as you can in elem school).

Doing art in the gen ed classroom just to "fill time" is silly. And that is what a lot of holiday projects are. I have the kids for less than 7 hours a day (when you factor in lunch and specials). And I still barely have enough time to teach the core subjects to mastery.

thank you so much girl..the input was appreciated..i think the best thing for me to do is buy the stuff on your list and what ever else his school requires i will pick up after school starts.I spoke to a few other parents from other grades and they have not recieved any thing either....very messed up if you ask me my opinion...i am sure the superintendent would love hearing that i got a supply list from some one over the internet!!!!! are you a teacher? i have seen in a few posts you say stuff about students and your class and such if so what grade?

I totally agree with you.

It would rage me when my children would get home with tons of various projects but yet struggling to learn their spelling or reading comprehension.

Last year my son had a teacher that I could have strangled with her meaningless projects... for home, but still, it took away from study time. In one 2 week time he had 6 projects due. Between Essay and Solar System, Drug posters, Fire prevention... etc etc..

It takes time to complete these, I divide myself between two kids every night reviewing homework and studying with them... then add to that both have a drug and fire prevention project to do and then others for my son. I put my time in at home, I know that its also my responisibility to make sure that my kid studys, reads, does homework. I just think that the school is flooded with things that take away from core subjects.

Fire prevention 6 years in a row.. fine do a small lesson. It shouldn't be mandatory to do an entire week of it and home assignments, posters etc (just using this as an example there are other things that were just a waste)

That's how shitty many educational systems are.

So get the fuck out of here with that collective benefit bullshit. Education is a commodity, meaning we could deliver it better, faster, cheaper and more efficiently through the private sector. People want to bitch about Indian outsourcing...for any business person, how can we NOT outsource?
