wrist size

Is wrist size a infallible indicator of growth potential or can it sometimes be misleading? Does wrist size indicate how fast a person can gain muscle? I have 6.75 inch wrists and am 5'8. Would that be considered small or medium size?

I have 6.75 inch wrist, same as you at 5'9", and I don't have too much problem gaining muscle, as long as I train properly.

But Colin, what do your ankles measure? Because if I recall you're mostly a lower-body guy.

9 inches - is that big or small?

I'm pretty smalled boned all over I think - my dad is 5'6" and his fingers, hands, and bone size dwarfs mine!
All he does is sit on his butt all day long and his legs and calves are a lot bigger than mine, and my legs are not that small to begin with :)

Upper body is coming up pretty well at the moment.

i dont think wrists really ahve anything to do with it, just train properly and youll do fine

Holy cow colin! LOL this is hilarious. My ankles are actually bigger than yours at 9.25, yet my legs are so miserably tiny. I measure in at a pathetic 22" apiece. Yeah, I think there's more to this story than bone structure.

actually it depends where I measure it

Its 9 inches where its smallest in the ankle area, but 10.25inches on the actual boney/joint area - the bit that bulges out.

Which is it?

The smallest part of your ankle is the measurement, so not the bony part.

Mine are 10.5" my wrists are pretty average at 7"

I swear that my wrists have become larger over the past 18 months of strongman training...

Personally I think the whole "wrist size/ growth indicator" is complete BS.

the rule of thumb, so to speak, for whether you are small/average/large framed, is to grasp one wrist with the fingers of the other hand.

If your thumb and middle finger don't meet at all, you're large framed/"big boned".

A little gap to a little overlap, is medium.

A larger overlap is small framed.

What, if anything, it actually means as far as ability to train or put on mass easily, I don't have a clue... :)

I found this a long time ago and thought it was intertesing. Put your wrist size in and it calculates how big the rest of your body should measure up. I put mine in and its pretty damn close, but maybe a little smaller than i acutally am in some spots.

http://javascript.internet.com/calculators/male-body.html

Interesting, don't think it's designed with those that work out for mass in mind :) But you could add a 10% increase to the calcs.

Neck is right on. My thighs and calves are larger.
Scew them and their 29.6 waist measurement :) (yeah, my wrists are small)

my wrists measure at 6.75inches but I have no problem in gaining mass if I eat enough. right now I weigh about 185 @10-12%bf. For 5'7" i think it is fine, I could bulk a lot higher if I want to but I prefer to keep the weight down for boxing

i'm not surprised. i have the smallest wrist of anybody here LOL. damm i'm screwed. i'm 5'8 1/2, 180 or so. started out at 115. i'm only 23 and have been training for only 5 years. hopefully i'm not close to my limit yet

At a height of 5' 9.5" my wrists are 7 and 3/8 inches in circumference. I don't think the circumference of your wrist has anything to do with the amount of muscle of strength that you can add to your frame.

Neck: 14" Goal: 16.8"
Chest: 35.5" Goal: 45.5"
Waist: 32.2" Goal: 32"
Hip: 36" Goal: 38.6"
Bicep: 12" Goal: 16.38"
Forearm: 10.5" Goal: 13.2"
Thigh: 22" Goal: 24"
Calves: 17" Goal: 15.5"

The goal is according to what that site says. Funny... I always thought my calves were my best bodypart. Everything else is sadly lagging. All measurements are cold, as I figured they should be. I really have to up my protein intake. Funny... my calves were this big when I was doing 100+ reps with no weight. I don't think they grew too much from the 5x15 I did while on the 5x5.

Now flame me for my pathetic measurements... muah haha!

I agree totally with Louden on this one. I remember reading in magazines how writers were shocked that Serge Nubret could have 20 inch arms with 7 inch wrists and that he was the exception to the rule. This kind of depressed me at the time 14 years ago when my wrists measured a slight bit below 7 inches and my arms were 13 inches. Im at a 7 and a 1/4 inch wrist now with a 21 and an 1/8 inch arm (tape tight and true and straight up and down) and I also yell bullcrap to that theory!

Height 5"11, all cold

7" 3/4 wrist
9" 1/4 ankle
13" 1/2 forearms
44" 1/2 chest
17" neck
15" 3/4 arm
15" 1/2 calves
23" thighs
32" waist

As you can see, my arms, chest and legs need a push

no dude, it probably means you can get freaky big and strong. no denying that you are already damn strong for your age.

Ugh, I don't know why my chest and arms lag so horribly. I guess it's that I have to eat more -- but still, my calves are like weeds. And they grow seemingly no matter what I do. Perhaps I have good... uhm... 'calf genetics'?

Well my wrist is a tad over 6", I'm 5'10" 275-285. What does this mean?

i just took measurements for the rest of my body
here they are:

5'3`170, 18 yrs old

chest: 43 in
thigh: 23 in
Forearm: 13 in
arm: 15 3/4 in
waist: 32 in - i need to trim down a bit
calf: 14 in - i should work out these puppies more
neck: 16 in - that means nothing to me, i was just curious
ankle: 9 in - puny haha

Everyone keep in mind wrist/ankle measurements indicate your "natural" potential. Obviously juicing allows you to break past that point.

It seems fairly accurate. My ankles are 10.5" and I had pretty huge legs before I even started training. My wrists are only 7" and I don't have a naturally large upper body. This is only a guideline, it's not set in stone.

dang, i didn't realize my wrists and ankles were so small compared to most of you.

6-3/8" wrist
8-1/2" ankle
5'7" height

I dont think you should think about wrist or ankle size, or foot size, or whatever unless you are looking for excuses.... You shouldn't have limits in your heart. Believe you are capible of greatness, and then pour your heart into acheiving it.

I like your attitude fatty!!:)

Okay, I will weigh in here! Ankle and wrist size has nothing at all to do with you ability to build muscle.....I know the theory is a larger wrist means a larger frame therefore the ability to build more muscle..... But the size potential of your muscle has to do with the cross sectional (is that a word :D ) dimensions of your muscle / muscle belly the widthx the length x the depth of say your biceps , determines the max size potential ( not that you may neccassarily reach is ...you probably won't) your muscle cannot be wider or thicker then it is long ....if it were...it would n't be able to contract.
Here are my measurements ..6' 3" or so 250LBS
ankle 8 3/4 ...measureing at the smallest place above the ankle joint...where the hell are you guys measuring ...
calfs 17 1/2 a differential of 8 1/4 inches ...and I think my calfs look like shit...what the hell do you guys 's calf look like with a 4-5 inch differential ...hell for my calfs to look good I think I need to get a 10-11 inch differential!
THIGHS 27 1/4 note ...10 inch differential ....my thighs do look good.;)
wrists 7 7/8 " ( that measurement has grown over the years as the tendon that runs down the bone on the pinky side ...ulna? raidius??? is quite thick on me I am talking round like a 1/2 inch pipe!
Forearms 14 5/8 need another inch to look really good
arm 18 1/2
neck 19 ( Huh...I haven't measure that since I got married 2 1/2 years ago shirt size was ...just checked 2xL36/37 ... I thought the neck was 18 ..wow..1 inch growth and no direct neck work.WTF

No kidding...many bodybuilders who look the most impressive have very small joints, anyway, like Flex Wheeler. Some might say, oh, well, Flex's joints hold him back because he looks like a little kid standing next to Nasser, the implication being that a big-boned Flex would have a lot more mass.

That's goofy, though. The reason Flex only competes effectively in the 225 range is because the guy is a half-assed trainer, something exacerbated by the fact that he would take very long layoffs even when he wasn't injured.

I'm convinced he'd be a lot bigger if he didn't lift like Dillett (his former training partner, interestingly enough) or Vince Taylor. I remember reading once that Dorian, Jamo Nezzar, Flex, and Porter Cottrell were all hanging out, and Jamo tried to ask Flex about how he did BB rows. Flex said he didn't do them; they "got him out of breath." ! Jamo, Dorian, and Porter all nearly pissed themselves laughing, so the tale goes.

Some of the best calves I ever saw belonged to a guy that had girly knees and tiny little ankles. Maybe it was simply the forced perspective, but I kind of doubt it, since he said his calves only measured about 16"!

Those old wrist-ankle formulas might coincidentally yield an accurate result here and there, but they were largely set up for guys lifting in Steve Reeve's heydey. Their goals and methods differed from ours in a number of ways.

I am 6'3 210 7 inch wrist

16 neck
50 shoulders +-1.5 ( hard to measure yourself )
43 inch chest
15 bicept
13 forearm ( upper body is a little small need to work on my back and upper arms )
38.5 hips ( the only thing that it says is about right )
27 thigh
16.5 calve (my legs are bigger then what it says )
10 ankle

i have freakish legs for some reason

btw im about 14-16 % bodyfat

how's this?

height - 6'1"
weight - 210

wrists - 6 3/4
forearms - 12 1/2"
arms - 16"
chest - 45"
shoulders - 51"
neck - 16 1/2"
waist - 34 1/2"
Thighs - 25" (Left is actually 23 1/2 right now due to a knee surgery...but catching up)
calves - 16 1/2"

tell me my wrists and forearms aren't scrawny!!!...and if I am not lifting they get even smaller....I just ordered the captains of crush gripper, and a wrist roller (it was 10 bucks) from Elite Fitness systems to supplement the heavy stuff I do in the gym.....I don't mind that the rest of joints are small though....I mean who wants big knees and ankles?

I used to have a roomate in college who had these huge knees....his legs had no shape, they were just like the same thickness from top to bottom....wierd.
