Worried Wife

My husband has been a bodybuilder for the past 6 years, we have been married the past 2. He recently has had back surgery (less than 6 months ago) becasue he had a disk rupture, and he has several other disks that are still inflamed, not to mention he has deg disk disease. I was there when the doctor told him that he had to stop the heavy lifting, and that it wasn't good for his back, and at that time he agreed. But here we are a few months down the rd and he is itching to start lifting heavy again. He says he knows all about this and that I am silly... but I would like to get someone else's imput on this. He started going to the gym with me, trying to be my personal trainer, and he is just dying to show up all those young boys. But, at the risk of his health? I am just a worried wife.

lifting heavy but safely? i don't see a problem. If he gets his "heavy fix" from benching or other exercises that wont irritate his condition, then there is a solution to the problem. have him agree to condition his full body and he can go heavy on things that are acceptable and not detrimental to his back.

last time I heard, bench pressing would show up those young kids....

Well, I would love to go with the doctors advice, but he doesn't listen. He has done this for so long it is hard to give it up, and the young boys thing... I meant that these teenagers coming in acting like they are bad asses becasue they are lifting 175...and he is over there doing lightweights...knowing he could lift those boys and their weights. He tries to do things that are less abrasive on his back, but I still worry. I was hoping that someone here had a similar surgery....

Tell him to check his fucking ego and pride at the door, or train at home.

Jesus christ.

Either that, or risk injuring his back.

Where are you located at roughly (state). You can PM me if that would be easier...maybe I can suggest someone in your area that can help.

Stop lifting? I couldn't do it. I've torn things, slept on the floor from back pain, and lots of crazy things...but have yet to stop. You just have to find a way to get back to pushing yourself.

If it were me...I'd be hammering away at some good mornings with bands and extremely high reps (20-50 rep range) for a good while...maybe 3-4 months. Reverse Hypers 3-6x per week, and a good bit of front squats for a while.

I'll do all that I can to help...

which disks did he mess up, and how? (just wondering)

here's the problem with a ruptured disk. when one goes bad, it makes the others around it weak. which will make it more likely that the surrounding disks will have problems. I am sure that the doc has gone over this with both you and your husband.
my advice is to listen to what the doctor says. that might make me somewhat of a hypocrit. I herniated my L5-S1 in March of last year. I was told that I had an 80% chance of full recovery. I completely took 3 months off from the gym. I didn't have a choice though. I could barely walk more than the distance between two telephone poles w/o having to stop b/c of the pain. it took me 5 minutes to put my shoes on.
what I am getting at, is that the doctors told me that it would be in my best interest to never lift heavy again. well, I didn't listen. Am, I saying that this is what your husband should do? NO. it sounds to me like your husbands situation is a lot worse than mine. I did not have to have surgery, and I only messed up 1 disk. If your husband feels the need to workout, then he should take a lot of caution in doing so.
PM me if you are interested, and we can talk about the things that I did for recovery.
