Womens Bodybuilding-The Romano Factor

John Romano, Senior Editor of the magazine, says this about the sport of Womens Professional Bodybuilding:

"The way I see it....female bodybuilding has become the ultimate redheaded stepchild. While there's much conjecture over the fact that perhaps it can be saved, the fact is it's just too far gone!"

"A female jacked on male horomones just isn't a pretty thing.....Other than female bodybuilding, there's no such thing as an "Ugly Contest". If nothing else they have proven themselves-from sellout crowds at Madison Square Gardesn to a "Sideshow" at an Expo. Get the point ladies.....your act sucks!"

"The first step toward saving women's bodybuilding is to recognize it's oddity, then sell it to those who want to buy it. To drag it along side a community it has clearly outgrown is as disgraceful as it is morbid."

"Womens bodybuilding needs to be cleaved from the IFBB and renamed, "Extreme Female Physical Enhancemant", and left to find itself a warm and inviting home among the "schmoe's" of the world. Why insist on sticking around where you're not wanted? Just because women decide to imbibe male horomones and blow themselves up into androgynous aberations of the female form doesn't mean a bodybuilding federation has to provide them with a venue in which to exploit it....In it's current confused state, women's bodybuilding is clearly not welcome in today's hierarchy. WOMEN SHOULD HAVE LEFT BODYBUILDING TO THE MEN!"

definately sexist but when they are at extremes i agree completely, girls taking guys hormones is wierd as shit. consider it the same as michael jackson trying to make himself white. the result is a freakish half breed. but nothign wrong with girls that bodybuild, its just that they shouldn't be judged on who is the manliest looking.......... merely who is in great shape and sexy as hell

nothing wrong with women building as much muscle as they can naturally, but i agree that when they start taking androgens it's gone too far.

Agree with Romano 101%

bodies like frisky and sassy's are awesome.

I agree that when the sport requires that females take androgens its gone too far. Note that anavar is not an androgen.

I would say I agree with the way you put it best. I like them more femine looking but if they want to go balistic, have at it. Really, is it that much different than some of the freaks in the mens realm? I would rather see the physiques more streamlined like Shawn Ray or Dexter Jackson, or Flex Wheeler, but the freaks like Ronnie, or Marcus have their place as well.

And as far as Valentino, I don't read anything from that guy. I really have no respect for him and I don't know why MD gives him so much attention and such a huge spread. Just my opinion though.

He was a dick about it, but I agree with a lot of what he says, except the last sentence. There's nothing wrong with women bodybuilding, but I support his statements when they start juicing. To me it's no different than a guy shooting himself up with estrogen. One of those big "wtf"'s.

thats exactly it,there are freaks in all sides of the sport, not just womens , what i dont get is the huge change these girls make from when they get their pro card and wherer they are now,why cant they all just stay at that level.

It's a mental "sickness"; they may not even realize or care they're doing it to themselves.

Yeah, but you can say the same thing about the men as well.....well to a certain point. Yes, I see a major change with the women but mostly in virilization. Alot of the men change their entire physique after going pro. Ronnie has to be one of the best examples. If you look at his physique before his pro card and now, IMO, he shoulda kept his pre-pro card form.

agreed,i like the old school look

Hmmm... how to respond to this...?

This coming from a guy who dates people like Bethany Howlett. He has a right to hang out w/ whoever he wants, but he's making a very broad statement about somethign that has evolved to the freak level because it has never been really clear what points women are competing on. You never saw Arnold as friggen big as Ronnie Coleman. I also happened to know several amazing natural female bodybuilders. And let me tell you, that is an accomplishment to be honored because if you go to most natural BB shows, the women tend to come in all sorts of weird shapes because of their tendency to be lean & small on top & heavier on the bottom.

I doubt you will ever be able to kill women's bodybuilding, but I agree that it is dying a slow death. Stuff like Fitness & more so Figure are taking over not because they are better competitions (as so many people know, I think Figure borders on hilarious as a competition - its just a muscular T&A show ... even if I do plan to compete in it this year). But the reality is, those things were bringing in more ticket sales than women's BB.

This discussion will never stop so I guess I will continue to defend a strong woman's right to develop her muscle base to whatever level she wants with the request that she respect her body and not be ignorant about what she does with it. Have I ever given a shit if a guy thought I was too muscular? Hell no. I lift because my body responds to it, it feels good, it keeps my grounded and it certainly isnt' hurting me. I know at least 3 people who have survived car wrecks and by all rights should've been killed or parallyzed, except their muscle mass & physical conditioning saved them.

Will guys forever be discussing whether or not they like a women's build? Sure! Do I care? No! There are all levels of extremes of body dysmorphia on both the male & female side. It will always be there. BB & fitness happens to put a person's body on display for competition. But no one ever considers the work & determination to get there but will forever comment on how they look at that moment, subject to their own feelings or biases as to what makes women "beautiful". I doubt there will ever be an actual objectively judged competition for women to compete in in any sport. That is exactly why a whole generation of female athletes have suffered from anorexia, bulemia, and other stresses (collectively called "Female Athlete Triad") that affects their ability to live healthy lives, have children and still do their sport.

So.... yea don't get me started on this topic .... This is the result of the road we took to get here. With the help of male bias, judges, coaches and "society" demanding a certain look in order to succeed. So yea, I guess it is what it is.

I don't know how much truth there is to this but I read in a different publication, FLEX I think, that said they felt another problem with the women's side of the bodybuilding is that too many of the women, mostly pros, are involved in the porn industry and it is bringing an ugle light on the sport.

Any feedback on this?

Drugs like these can cause you to see things in yourself you've never before seen and then as with any drug, become very powerful. To take these androgens, etc. to achieve a goal may be a bit easier to recover from as opposed to taking them to be something you are not - because you do not already like the person you are. Seeing such overwhelming physical changes and then moving forward into competing and being judged solely/subjectively on how you 'look' for a moment in time can propel someone into more and more drugs to achieve a winning status. Then at this point maybe you surround yourself with people in the same circles telling you "You look great"....It becomes harder to see yourself any other way. You may think you look friggin amazing...kind of akin to an anorexic looking in a mirror. Everyone has a different line they may or may not cross...but as a women - we have much harsher critics once that line is crossed. IMO, rightly so. I'm sure you can see this is somewhat my story, but a story for any women. I never crossed the line and was always a more feminine BB...but some of those pics in this thread are scary...the faces tell all.

Just like acting / hollywood, there is a narcisistic angle to bodybuilding as well as an addictive personality attraction to it for both men & women. The porn part is more "acceptable" for women than men because of the homophobe aspect of it, however its probably just as active on both sides. But that probably developed as a result of the competition as well -- there's no money in women's professional bodybuilding. Mr. Olympia gets $100K, Ms. Olympia gets $30K.

Seriously the whole sport is just rampant with excesses and contradictions. You can pick at any one of them, but any aspect you pick at is probably going to be present, especially at the pro level for both men & women.

This was one of the first things I thought of when I read that article that talked about the porn. The $$$ for the women is for shit and they would probably be lees apt to stray into that industry if the money were more attractive in the comp.

The bigger they get, the less marketable they are to the general public, the more contest prize money drops, the greater need to pay the bills with porn and the freakier they need to get to do that. They just aren't getting it.

Well, it's claimed many male bodybuilders get involved in gay prostitution; I know for a fact that many, if not most, sell illegal drugs because even the men make crap for money, especially when you compare it to other professional "sports."

Another part of the lifestyle that perpetuates itself is the need for money for more drugs -either steroids or recreational -- prostitution to support the habit so they can continue to keep that shape. To a degree, once you have the shape, you sort of become a cartoon character & you have to maintain that character because that is now how people identify you.
