Reactionary title, but, consider this:

During the cold war, a war of idealogy, that fear of the soviet union kept a healthy distaste for communism among Americans...now that that is no longer a factor, it seems the natural tendency of the majority lower 80-95% to be romanced by the false promises of communism is free to take hold.

In my class, out of the 15 students, only 2, including me, were for a form of government NOT strongly or completely resmbleing communism.

These are not just young people, but middle class adults, all called for a form of governemnt that limited wages, exessive taxations on the richer segment of society in addition to salary caps across the board, with the additional tax revenue going to social programs.

communism sounds very good on paper but its application was very flawed

consider that FDR had 220+ communists in his administration and then consider the new deal programs and you will see where the die was cast...

that's just because they are giving up on the persuit of happiness, that they will never achieve anything great. So they might as well go the route of trying to equal the playing field.

The pro-capitalist economist, Ludwig von Mises, correctly stated that the 20th Century should be called the Age of Socialism, for this was the most sweeping of all ideologies during this era.

Socialism's greatest asset was the use of institutions for social reform: universities, media, Hollywood, government, etc. They realized the potential of a slow change as opposed to the evident failure of a forceful revolution. Start from the colleges where young men and women are still impressionable and ambitious, who will then go out into the world and spread the same ideology to others.

Communism, as seen in Leninist/Stalinist Russia, will probably not be the form of socialism seen in the US, but the watered down versions seen in most European countries. This is very evident from the programs advocated by those running for office in the Democratic Party.

Bwood is right Frack, communist have been here forever, and thier ideologies are well planted in our society.

Ann Coulture has drawn critism for stating she believes Joseph McCarthy was right all along, that our government and hollywood was filled with Commies. I agree with her on some of these points.

It is sad how many middle class folks wish for increased government and have these anti-rich, class ideologies. I would say its really more socialist than communist though.

The people in your poli sci class can only react to the current establishment and therefore will never make anything of themselves. Oh.... sorry dude :D just j/k
your class is a skewed sample.

the lower economic classes will always call for modification to the earnings of the higher earnes. They just want something for nothing.

Communism is class warfare.

You might get some interesting reactions if you ask them why the government should "take care of" all these things.

Cold war and fall of the soviet union already happened.

The one thing common among polysci peeps, is that they're always waiting for the other shoe to drop. And usually that other shoe is not only improbable but also highly idealistic.
