Why was the "Punching Bitches in the Face" thread locked?

Lady MacBeth

I also found it offensive because I see women getting shit on all the time. We often have no choice about what we can be. If we defend women, we're whiny feminazis. If we agree in the nicest way, then we're weak, and if we put little smilies up there, then we're cockteases. If we wear tight jeans, we're sluts, if we wear nice clothes, we're prudes, if we say something intelligent, we're uppity and if we don't like what you're saying about us, or worse yet, spurn your advances, we're bitches bitches bitches (for this one, see any of frackal's posts about women).

I have come to the belief that almost anyone gets shit on in our competiitve capitalist soicety. But, Lady MacBeth are you are arguing that the stereotyping of women justifies the double standard? I do believe there is a double standard. Your example, the slap, is different i think what many people on here are thinking is the theoretical situation where a woman punches a guy. In that case, theoretically, i think that there really should be nothing holding the guy back in the case of everyone being 'equal'.

That being said i have only made these points for the sake of argument and deep thought. As shallow as mine may be at times.

Sebass:

There is such a fine line between what we can generalize about and what we shouldn't. I often have a really hard time figuring this one out too. I don't know where to draw the line. I think that men are brought up to be very physical, and women to be more passive. Maybe that's changed a lot, but if a bully beats up a girl at school, her dad will almost never tell her to go back and beat the kid up, or to stop whining about it and stand up for herself. He would probably call the school or a teacher. This is a theoretical situation, but I'm sure you see what I'm getting at. We are reared so differently, it's very hard to make a sweeping generalization like "what happens to men=what happens to women".

Then we get into the argument that women have been thwarted from going into occupations in the sciences for years...should we just blame that on upbringing and move on? But we offer scholarships for women who want to go into these fields that men can't get. Is this unfair bias? Fuck, I don't know, I haven't thought about this for very long, and I don't want to start talking out of my ass.

And I don't think you're shallow, silly.

i think a lot of the frustration comes from the fact that whats socially acceptable for a women in terms of actions and behaviour towards the opposite sex has changed radically over the last 100 years, whereas whats expected behaviour for a man/gentleman hasnt changed all that much

hitting women is one such example. its almost hard to believe that there are men out their getting beaten silly by their partners, and having to go to casualty on a regular basis but are too ashamed to contact the authorities as they are ebing beaten by a girl, yet won't fght back because its been instilled into them that its wrong. its why it almost angers me to hear men say 'if a woman attacks you with a frying pan, its still not ok to hit her. just walk away man (even though she;s likely to clobber you over the head with it and in the same situation a police officer would shoot your ass dead!). it amazes me evenmore goven that in my experience women can be much more ruthless when fighting (i,e clawing, scratching, gouging etc)

i didn't even realise it myself but its hard for me to hit a woman and im a fairly detached guy, if almost any man sees a woman in distress he feels bad.

as for all the other things, i personally wouldnt think any of them ASIDE from the spurning of advances, as i;ve seen people do this quite harshly, so its entierly plausible one person may have had less than agreeable experiences in the past.

Ladymacbeth and Sebass make good points, but I don't think the thread should have been locked.

There was a good discussion going on.

Actually, I did not even read the thread until it was locked. Before, I just thought it was going to be the standard flame fest and insult war. Just based on the title. But then, I was surprised with how well thought out most everyone's response to it was.

I wonder if this is not a new phenomenon, but another happening like so many others that is more openly discussed now then it was in the past.

I locked it. It was tasteless and more to the point there IS ABSOLUTLEY NO REASON ON THIS EARTH TO HIT A WOMAN. PERIOD!!!

In your opinion, that may be true, Wodin. Others probably disagree with you tho. What's wrong with a little discussion anyway? It's not like the thread was turning into a flame war or anything....
