Is just a psychological ghost of some people or is really used by some to show hate against any other race? I'd like to hear opinions from Southeners and Yankees. lol

That flag represents the South, the confederacy.

The South Decided to leave the union, one of the many "issues" was slavery and how they saw/treated africans and african americans.

That flag may bring some pride so rednecks in the south, but to most of the world it represents a repressive society that endorsed slavery 100%. I'd like to see it removed from any goverment buildings in the US and taken out of individual state flags.

That flag causes the same emotions in many African Americans that the nazi sawastea causes in those of Jewish descent.

the same reason th swastika is considered racist, bad people used it when doing bad things, funny thing is the swastika is a buddhist symbol for peace

funny how many dipshits i see in michigan flying the stars and bars...i think it is lost on them that they are yankees

Not yankees. Defective Kanadians.
I tried to explain to fellow from Georgia, that I was Canadian. He didn't know where that was, so referring to him in his capacity as a U.S. soldier, I said"We're from North of you."
To which he replied with a suspect look on his face, while looking at the Red Maple Leaf on my shoulder, "You're a Yankee?"

Your first mistake, trying to hold a discussion with someone from the South.

Your second mistake, being Kanadian.

Hold on, reverse that.

Any of you guys read Gone With the Wind?

To me it was an eye-opener as to how the other side saw it.

The whole Confederacy thing, heck even the KKK, arose from people standing up for what they thought was right. It could just as easily been my ancestors as easily as anyone else's.

I dunno, decrying all things Confederate is the same in my eyes as decrying all things Arab. You can't wipe out a whole category in such a broad stroke, especially if they aren't around to defend themselves.

A few years back I was standing outside the building where I was working puffing on a stogie when a couple stopped in front of me and greeted me with "how y'all doin?". I responded congenially with "how's it goin eh?". I noticed the car had North Carolina plates and that it had a ski rack loaded with snow faring equipment on top. So the guy says "could I ask ya for some directions?" I say "sure". He says "could you tell me where we could find some snow? We're on vacation looking to do some skiing". I don't bat an eyelash and respond "Sure. Just head straight north and drive for about another thousand miles". He looks at me kinda funny and says "OK" and drives off.

Oh yeah, I forgot. It was FUCKING JULY.

yeah, us southerners can't carry on a decent conversation

much like northerners aren't rude and opinionated.

For many people in the region I was originally from, the confederate flag was used to symbolize the fact that they lived on the N. American landmass but didn't identify with the Federal government- or much of the local goverment either. Thus you'd see anyone from herb farmers to black motorcycle gangs sporting Dixie as well as the usual suspects.I can see where people will look at the face value of an issue and make judgement, but for some situation is more complex, or possibly simpler.

LOL@people looking for racism everywhere.

People forget that the civil war was about a country that had split between agrarian and industrial cultures. The reason slavery was easily targeted by the north was because they didn't have the farms that were dependent on ultra low-cost labor. There were other tensions at the time that resulted from the split culture.

Slavery was a horrible, inexcusable chapter in American history, but the civil war wasn't solely about this puristic vision of all people being free.

P.S. To a lot of people, the confederate battleflag (the original picture posted) has to do with their heritage and the southern way of life. It's not about racism as much as it is about a simple, agrarian life that many people long to return to. Remember that many farmers and farms have been displaced over the last 100 years by industrial farming. Particularly in the Appalachian mountains, these people aren't necessarily being retrained as investment bankers or computer programmers -- they are sitting in shacks trying to grow their tobacco and corn, which is becoming increasinly hard to do.

Well said bro, that's how I see it. Just wanted to read more opinions. My conclusion is always the same. In these days, racism is the word used by those who feel inferior or have serious identity problems, based on background/ancestry/race/ethnicity. The past (slavery) was horrible. Watching things from today, a big mistake. But history is history. The rebel flag today, is a great symbol of pride and tradition in the American history. Heritage, not hate. Even if it's used by some Rednecks, we should make fun of it instead of denigrate our folklore.
