Why don't kids work anymore?

Trance

New member
We recently got a shitload of snow, and rather than getting my lazy ass up to go shovel it, I have been waiting for some rotten kid to knock on my door and offer to do it.

Yes, I am a bum.

However, I've noticed that the show-shoveling, lawn-mowing, leaf-raking breed of kid had become extinct. Why? Are they all independently wealthy, or are they all selling crack?

This means that I am going to have to get off my ass, find some gloves in the Bermuda Triangle that is my closet, and freeze for an hour. Damn.

That sucks. Usually most neighborhood teens will do anything for a buck - like above mentioned tasks. Maybe you could put an ad in the neighborhood paper if there is one.

mommy and daddy support them all thats why, that and kids are lazy and dont like physical work,or so ive noticed

i still shovel my neighbours driveway and sidewalk cuz they are older

Can I please post this one more time for everyone who is unaware - I no longer post at the Thin Forum.

bah

a sizeable percent of high school & college students have part time jobs alongside school. giving them, on average, 55-60 hour workweeks. how can kids be lazy? it is a negative stereotype.

I was more referring to the pre-job kids. It seems as if kids don't do chores or odd jobs any more.

When I was a kid, the neighborhood was crawling with kids who were doing yard work and little odd jobs just to make a few bucks. I never see much of that anymore. Just wondered why. My theory is that they are all parked in front of Playstations, whereas in my day, your little butt got tossed outside after school.

Sorry, the first time I saw you on a thread over here, it was in reference to the Elite vs Thin Forum shenanigans.

Well, fuck, now I'm a jackass. In your defense, I was trying to point out the irony of Houndog's comment in which he called you a fat ass.

The first time I saw you on a thread over here, it was in reference to the Elite vs Thin Forum shenanigans, so get a goddamn grip on yourself. Later.

Just tired of being typecast. Got a little ticked.

Because it's easier for parents to just give the kids money to get them out of their hair for a little while.:(

For the parent to ask the child to earn the money by doing work, might require the parent to actually spend time with their child.
We can't have that, now can we.

When I was a kid, I had to work all my after-school hours helping to build my father's rental property empire. He felt kids should pay their own way in doing chores for their room & board as though it was my fault for being born. The only carrot he held out was that some day I'd inherit his "empire." After he died, I found out he had disinherited me. Hope he ended up on a one-way voyage on the Event Horizon and rots in hell for all eternity.

make kids work! are you insane? that would cause them discomfort which in turn is making them do something not pleasurable and that means lawsuits, alligations, loss of income, and them ending up with all your money. :)

lol, i think they should work a little for some extra cash. as for hs kids working the problem is most feel they are above flippin burgers for 5.15 an hour. no they have to have the job making 7,8,9 an hour doing jack. if they don't get that job they won't work. that's the problem, it's like they feel they deserve high paying jobs with little to no work involved even though they have no experience doing nothing but thinkin they know everything.

AH, the fruits of technological advancement.

until the beginning of the century kids almost had to work 16 hour days to avoid starving. now someone with $20 a day can life free of hunger, disease & danger from the elements. now everyone is mad that people don't put in 16 hour work days anymore. odd. this makes me want to move out into the woods even more.

what i am sayin is if you are not old enough to get a job then doing a few chores for folks in the neighborhood for some extra cash is a good thing. instead parents are handin kids 20, 30 or even 50 bucks a week allowance and most don't do chores around the house either. if you are able to get a job then do it. but don't think since you are a high and might teenager that working for minimum wage is under you. you've got no experience & little education so why would you(not you personally) feel you deserve 7-9 bucks an hour doing a job that has no work involved?

i wasn't referring to your post when i made mine. i was talking about how all this time we as a society have tried to create a life of leisure (althought we deny it, 100 years ago people dreamed of a world where the work week was 14 hours, not more 80 hour work weeks. look it up in a history book by richard shenkman) and now that we have it we are mad that kids only work 35 hours a week (school, technically, is work i guess).

I shovel my own drive way which is not small, my sidewalk, and my neighbors on each side sidewalk. I mow my front and back lawn in the spring and summer, then rake it in the fall.

I personally wouldn't pay some kids to do it b/c they do shit work, and expect to be praised for it. I'd rather do it myself, and know its getting done right.

nord i see your point. btw, are you sears on another board? just wondering cause i know nordstrom is a store online.

Yeah, it's weird this whole kids not working stuff. Before I was 16 I was babysitting all the time and my kid brother would shovel, rake, do odd jobs. Now, no one does this anymore. Kids, and I'm not talking about the ones who can work, are handed everything and keep gettting lazier. When I was working in the mall last year it made me ill to see young girls coming into my store buying $100 of crap on their daddies credit card!! Kids need a kick in the ass...

I was just discussing this tonight... a buddy of mine was expectd to mow the lawn, wash the car, shovel etc when he was younger. His teenage brother is now offered money and still refuses. My buddy is now holding out for reparations :D
Damn I used to wash my dad's car for free. If I got the chrome really shiny I'd get 10 cents for a candy. And he would inspect it, too.

Other kids sometimes give my son a hard time because he is always after extra work around the neighborhood. I cannot believe this. I overheard a conversation between my son and another kid his age (17) and the other kid basically had the attitude "What is wrong with your father? My parents give me money every week and I do not do anything." A co-worker of mine gives his 13 year old daughter 40 dollars a week just to keep her room clean. You have got to be kidding me.

I'm 21, so only a few years away from childhood myself. I mowed lawns, shoveled walks, and sold nightcrawlers when I was younger (10-14). Some other kids did this stuff for money too, but it was small town Iowa. There were also a lot who got money for nothing. Gowing up with Six brothers and sisters, this was not really an option for us.

There's a lot of kids who get money for doing things they should do anyway, like cleaning their room, doing dishes, etc. This really gives them a warped sense of what they're entitled to.

Just to think that my small "snow removal" donation has led to their first purchase of weed. :)
