If you want to really getting beaten up verbally go to an MSN chat room. Almost everytime I go there is some asswipe there who needs to pick on one person and sometimes other join in. It is really a good way to study society on the net.
People will say a lot of thing online that they would never say to another's face. Most of the jerks that do this are probably complete nerds in real life and they probably look like trolls. It's a way to make themselves not feel so gross and alone.

I think it has to do with immaturity and poor communication skills. Lots of times someone may get mad but can't identify why or rationalize it (look at the situation objectively) so they resort to name calling and cursing.

there are two types of people who name call: those who are just screwin around and those who are pussies in real life, and know they would get the shit kicked out of them if they ran into the wrong person. i wouldn't take name calling on the net too seriously. and btw, i too 'called names', right in this post

I think sometimes it has alot to do with fear. Like when some guy is extremely homophobic and he feels like he has to call gay guys names and threaten them, it kind of reinforces that mentality of 'being gay is bad' in his head, because if he didn't reinforce it in his own mind, he might start having wet dreams about getting it on with big buff guys every night.
