Why do gas prices continues rise?

Do you know? Or do you have an opinion? It's getting outrageous.

What exactly do they gain by decreasing it?

OPEC only decreases prices once they see demand go down.

Roughly translated: When people of the world start getting annoyed and consuming less...

-- they lower prices. Therefore, I guess so far we're bending over and taking it and consuming the same.

Even rougher translation:

(made-up #'s)

World: Uses 35 billion barrels @ 1.55 - Week 1.

Opec: Let's raise to $1.70 see what happens.

World: Uses 35 billion barrels @ 1.70 - Week 2.

Opec: Haha! Losers. Let's raise to $1.95 see what happens.

World: Uses 35 billion barrels @ $1.95 - Week 3.

Opec: OMG! What idiots. Let's go further and raise to $2.05!

World: Uses 29 billion barrels @ $2.05 - Week 4.

Opec: OH Fuck! They're cuttin' back now. Let's go back to a nice $1.85

World: Uses 35 billion barrels @ $1.85 - Week 5.

Opec: Send out press release "Demand for oil drops. Prices go down accordingly".

End result: People start blaming each other for driving SUV's and raisng prices. OPEC guys sit there and laugh.

sure it sounds like a simple dorky system -- but cutting aside all the fat and fancy calculations -- that's pretty much the backbone of how it works. Charge as much as the world is willing to accept.

Being a finite resource I would imagine they have nowhere to go but up.

Just a guess though.

I've been reading lately that a lot of the price increases we have been seeing is due to more of an uncertainty than anything. Some are saying that after memorial day prices will drop and be more reasonable. I sure hope so seeing as how favorable it is for the market.

They always raise it just before holiday weekends.

Why?

Here's the big complex scientific answer:

Cuz they can make more money from a captive market.

:)

(of course, for the public -- there's readily available excuses on consumption, demand, increased labour, etc. etc. to warrant the increase).

As soon as someone figures out how to squeeze 200hp and decent low-end torque out of a hydrogen engine, I'll be all over it. Until then tho, I'm just going to bend over at the gas station like everyone else and take it.
