Why do Americans bump shoulders when they greet?

Ive never been to the US ,so the only contact ive had is thru TV. I always see Americans doing some sort of hand grab then they lean in like there going to give you a kiss on the cheek but they bump opposite shoulders together. Does this really go on or is it just on TV.Do they reallise it looks stupid?

I don't bump shoulders. when I greet someone, first we shake hands, then i pull them into me and lick their gums. I think its a little friendlier.

Well, it's not the common greeting. If you get your information about American culture from MTV I can see the confusion. It's a greeting that originated in the hip hop subculture, which dominates MTV, but you will never see businessmen or the majority of the population shaking hands this way. At the very least, it looks much less geigh than the cheek kissing going on in Europe. This difference originated from the African-American desire to seperate themselves from the dominant culture, ebonics being another example.

Mate ,thanks for the info.
I guess I do prefer it to a traditional french or italian greeting.
So if this is a A/American thing why do white people do it?
So its sort of like wearing a tea towel on your head, its a status symbol,acting a certain way (bumping shoulders) wearing certain clothes.(tea towel on your head)

Most hip hop albums in the US are purchased by middle and upper middle class white males. They simply adopted the hip hop culture because it became "cool." I was surprised when some Japanese tourists commented on the fact they thought every US city was going to be like a John Wayne movie, we really don't have regular gunfights in the streets, regardless of the movies.

Next time someone pisses you off driving or looks at you funny, call them out to the street and gun them down. It is surprizingly effective.

One of my Yank friends lives with a bunch of black guys. I'll go to shake their hand and they turn it into some kind of school yard one-handed pattacake pattacake bakers man. I just keep my outstretched hand there until they stop fucking around. Guess it only looks cool if you both know what you're doing.

I can honestly say that I have never seen any guys great each other that way in this town. It would be a pretty clear invite to getting hit by some pipeliner, roughneck or rancher for certain.
But hey a lot of the kids in town think they are little hoodrats and dress ghetto so maybe we will see some more of it in the future. :worried:

Sounds to me like its just a fad , done by try hard wannabies , acting like there the shit.Crist I hope it doesnt catch on here.Probably will , most every other US fad catch's on here. Its just a more intimate (not in a sexual way u faggots) ways of shaking a good buddys hand. I usually do to people i know well or havent seen in awhile. It use to be more of a thuggish(hip hop culture type thing) but now is commonplace amongst alot of different types of peeps. no big deal.
