Why can I lift a helluva lot more on machines than free weights?

I'm guessing because it's assisted in some way, and your stabiliser muscles aren't being used as much, but I sort of feel like I'm cheating now. Should I stop using machines??

definately, as long as your using the free weights with correct technique and trying to increase the weight on the major compound lifts on a weekly basis you will have much better results. read the training information vault at the top of the page.

the main reason is because the free weight section is usually packed and I can't get my own bench when I choose to go. I'm using the top ends of the weights on the machines but why is there a poor estimation of the weight that is being lifted?

balancing free weights and bars is fundemental core step to master, and it therefore works the muscles used in balancing and correct form.

You'll work far more muscle areas in the designated spot you wish to hit with free-weights and the workout will be much, much better.
