why are choppers handle bars up so high?

Why? they going down the road with all glorious armpit hair blowing in the wind, like they are airing out an infection? And then manuvering them is nearly impossible you can't turn your head and the handlebars at the same time.

It's purely a style thing. The ape hanger style handle bar became super popular in the late 70's and reached it's apex in the late 90's. Of course when one guy put a 8" riser on the next had to go 10" until you get the extreme rise on some bikes. This can make stearin difficult and your arms tend to go to sleep when raised above the heart for long periods of time. So all in all they are rediculous.

It's purely a style thing. The ape hanger style handle bar became super popular in the late 70's and reached it's apex in the late 90's. Of course when one guy put a 8" riser on the next had to go 10" until you get the extreme rise on some bikes. All ya gotta do is rent Easy Rider or the earlier "biker" movies with Bruce Dern or Peter Fonda. These movies spread the style.

At the same time you had the more "puriest" riders on BSA or Triumph not following this craze.

Then .... came the college students on Hondas.
