Why All Men Should Sleep Alone

Sleeping with a lover has a powerful and negative effect on one part
of a man's anatomy: his brain. Men, whether you have sex or not,
sharing your bed all night long can actually make you stupid,
sapping your brain power--at least temporarily.

That's the surprising conclusion reached by scientists from the
University of Vienna in Austria, reports New Scientist. Oddly, men
thought they slept better with a partner and women believed they did
not. In fact, both men and women had more disturbed sleep, but in
men it affected their ability to perform on cognitive tests the next
day.

This has nothing to do with having sex--or not. It's all about sleep
quality.

The study: Led by Gerhard Kloesch, the team studied eight unmarried,
childless couples in their 20s using both questionnaires and a wrist
activity monitor called an "actigraph" to assess sleep patterns. The
couples spent 10 nights sharing the same bed and 10 nights sleeping
in different beds.

The results for men: Men said they slept better with their partner,
but in actuality they had more disturbed sleep even when they did
not have sex before falling asleep. That lack of sleep caused
increased levels of a stress hormone, which reduced their ability to
perform simple cognitive tests the next day, reports New Scientist.
Interestingly, when men had sex and then fell asleep with their
partner, they were better able to remember their dreams the next day.

The results for women: Women said they slept better alone, and they
were right. Still, even when they slept with their partners they
reported being far more refreshed in the morning than their sleep
time indicated. Unlike their partners, their stress levels and
mental scores did not suffer. When it comes to dream recall, women
were the opposite of men. They remembered their dreams better when
they slept alone than when they slept with their partner.

"It's not surprising that people are disturbed by sleeping together.
Historically, we have never been meant to sleep in the same bed as
each other. It is a bizarre thing to do," Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep
expert at the University of Surrey, told the BBC News. "Sleep is the
most selfish thing you can do, and it's vital for good physical and
mental health. Sharing the bed space with someone who is making
noises and who you have to fight with for the duvet is not sensible.
If you are happy sleeping together that's great, but if not there is
no shame in separate beds."
