Who will win the format war? Blu Ray or HD DVD?

Blu Ray..

reason:

Fewer technologies for copy right and duplication of products..

Fewer people will be able to pirate the end products, thus protecting the artist and owners of the product..

And, why do people keep upgrading Microsoft and many others?? because the newer version is better?? or so that it's harder to steal the license??

yep.. you got it..

HD just cause I hate sony at the moment .....

I really dont think there will be winner, by the time someone wins a new format will take the title from them ....

Hopefully its over within a few years, so people can actually buy the new format without worrying about buying old tech.

Blu-Ray because it's just better. I know that didn't matter in the past (with vhs etc..), but now people expect more.

It's very hard to get over that cheap HD price though. This christmas may tell the tale. Too many people buying the cheaper HD. I still gotta believe in the BR though. Sorry.

I think there's a reason HD is that cheap. They might as well not make money and still survive instead of going extinct.

BR.

why not both?

Everything is in limbo with big companies backing each of them

if the FCC would get off their asses and get this digital stuff done, then this would be a bigger issue than it is at the moment.

Fox, Disney and Sony are Blu-ray
Universal and Paramount are HD DVD
WHV both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

If Fox or Disney go to HD, the dominoes will fall and HD DVD will win the battle. There is no difference in quality between the two formats.

disclosure: I work for WHV

Hmmm, what if Univ and Paramount go to BR? What kind of statement was that?

Is one format potentially better than the other? I thought BR was.

Actually, the format war is the best thing for consumer right now. If there was no war, there would be no incentive for Sony to lower the price of their Blue-ray player. Now, the blu-ray player has dropped from $999 (outrageous) to $599 (expensive). I attribute that to the hardware war that Sony and Toshiba are waging. There is no way paramount will go BD because they just announced their decision a month ago.

HD DVD COGS are cheaper
It's cheaper to code HD DVD
Picture quality is the same
Blu-ray has a very slight advantage in sound quality (not noticable for most people)
Blu-ray has more potential for bonus features. However, it is so expensive to program that suff that we are not using the full potential and I don't expect we will in the future.
On the same title, Blu-ray sells 30%-50% more units. However, earlier this year it was outselling HD by 200%. HD has made a comeback lately.

HD should just throw in the towel. People have dragged screwdrivers over the surface of BluRay discs, wiped them off and they play like new. It's just better quality, not to mention the prices will only keeping dropping. Toshiba is releasing a $100 HD DVD player soon, but that's about the only (temporary) advantage HD DVD will ever have over Blu Ray. HD DVD....fuck it's even more of a P.I.T.A to say vs. BluRay...rolls right off the tongue and into your living room.

Well, you've pretty much validated my point I was making in my first post.

BR has the 'potential' to be better because of more 'storage', 'space'(?). "Better audio" (for those who are critical) Well, that says it's 'better'. People tend to want better these days with HDTV doing well. That can be argued for today's 1080p on some size sets. Wether it gets the job done or not, I don't know, but it IS potentially the better format.

Yes, it's always better to have a war like this, BUT if one would win, then more companies would start making the players, thus getting prices down. All electronics prices go down. That's obvious with all the HDTV's selling lower and lower each week. These players would be the same way. Wait until one wins, then we'll see a bunch of companies making them and prices will drop.

Hd will probably win this war, Blu-ray is the best quality, but the affordablility of HD will cater to more people.

The below is one of the replies to the article.... It was back in April btw...

"The press release you based this entire story on has not been confirmed and even the translation is somewhat in contention. This is a great case of amateur journalism. Some have speculated they might indeed be Blu-ray players and others have said a price analysis indicates these players are being bought for about $50/unit. A better title for this article would have been "Walmart names HD DVD the winner, but maybe Blu-Ray, or perhaps neither".

Beta was superior quality to VHS but lost the battle. The problem is that the differences between HD DVD and Blu-ray are just not discernable to the average person. I've seen both in demonstration on a 100k projector and 200k sound system (here at the WB studio lot) and I could not tell the difference.

I think all the studios should support both formats and the consumers should decide what they want. I guarantee that the lower price of HD DVD will win out vs. the very slight quality difference of Blu-ray. In the meantime, I'd hold out on buying hardware because the market could really go either way.

It hasn't so far though, and BluRay is only getting cheaper.

This Christmas buying season MAY tell us something.
