For competition pistol shooting you cannot go wrong with a Glock. Those guns are indestructable. I own a Glock 17(9 mm) and love it. I like the 1911 as well.
For home defense get a 12 gauge shotgun. People might break in but they are NEVER leaving if you unload with one of these suckers.
