For a self defense .38 revolver, take a look at the Smith 642 or the 442 revolvers. (or the 340 and 640 if you want the option of shooting .357 magnums) They have a shrouded hammer so each and every pull of the trigger is exactly the same. You won't find yourself squeezing one off accidentally, and they can be fired from inside a pocket or pocketbook without the hammer snagging (cause there is none). They look a little different than you are used to, but it kind of grows on you.
If revolvers are the simplest handguns, then those Centennial Series J frames are the simplest of the simplest. Only possible issue is a 5 shot cylinder, but that's not that big of a deal either really.
That said, having one of these as a back-up to a short barrel shotgun for home defense is the best of everything.
