Maybe to them it was a 'joke'. Easy for them to say from their couch, no? ]One could say they said it from a couch, another could say they said it from their experience. Certainly it was against a hopelessly overpowered enemy, still, people went there and died,people go on the freeway and die. and one needs to be wary of being critical of servicepeople who did what was asked of them. They knew what they were getting into when they signed up. No conscripts here.
Bullets don't discriminate. Dead is dead and those who went there and got killed - friendy or enemy fire - left real survivors back home. I've seen good guys get killed in training. Death is forever. Training can be very dangerous.
I think your family members, despite their commendable service in conditions which could be regarded as "more brutal" than the 1991 Gulf War, are out of line for referring to anyone's service in a hostile foreign country as a 'joke'. Hostile foreign country? NO WAY you can compare Nazi Germany or South Vietnam with this.
