Who on this board would go to war if a full scale war broke out???????

The final words of the Prophet Mohammed were to "never allow the infidels to occupy holy land". ie Saudi Arabia where the US set up a military base.

I think this also may also have something to do with reason American's are so despised by the Muslim people.

Those of you too cowardly to fight should read this:

http://www.pownetwork.org/bios/r/r077.htm

You may think you know who and what you are, but I suggest you READ that story, because I guarantee you don't know who you are or what you would do in that same situation. In addition, if you think you are a better man than COL Rowe because you claim you won't allow yourself to fight a 'stupid' or 'political' war (a truly bullshit claim if I ever heard one), then you are totally delusional.

If I was needed, of course I'd serve. With that stack of rifle plaques I've won I could probably make it into sniper school ;)

What is going on here? WHAT war? Breaking out WHERE? What are the circumstances?

Serving in the Gulf war? 100 hours of ground "war" against a decimated and demoralized force surrendering by the tens of thousands. More Americans killed by AMERICANS than by the "enemy." Funny how people wear that like a badge of honor.

Both my father who served in WWII and whose brother flew daylight raids over Berlin (shot down over nazi Germany and operated on without anesthetic to save his live) and my uncle who led a platoon through Vietnam for two tours of duty consider that "war" a joke. The overwhelming majority watched the war on CNN along with the folks at home.

I would also add that this bullshit about fighting for freedom and country, according to those in my family who know, goes right out the window once you pick up a rifle and step into hell. You fight for your life and your buddy's and it stops there.

Maybe to them it was a 'joke'. Easy for them to say from their couch, no? Certainly it was against a hopelessly overpowered enemy, still, people went there and died, and one needs to be wary of being critical of servicepeople who did what was asked of them.

Bullets don't discriminate. Dead is dead and those who went there and got killed - friendy or enemy fire - left real survivors back home. I've seen good guys get killed in training. Death is forever.

I think your family members, despite their commendable service in conditions which could be regarded as "more brutal" than the 1991 Gulf War, are out of line for referring to anyone's service in a hostile foreign country as a 'joke'.

Lastly, this post was pure theory. In all likelihood there will be no conscription for this conflict.

Hostile foreign country? NO WAY you can compare Nazi Germany or South Vietnam with this.

Unless my country is directly affected by the conflict (which is not the case now), I wouldn't. Anyway the US and Bush doesn't need the Canadian "army", since we don't really have an army but rather some kind of National Guard. I was reading the other day that our CF-18 are now incompatible (electronics) with US air force jets and british. Nice. Not to mention our Sea King are just flying trash can. But we have a new cammo suit. Still waiting for the desert version.....

Well, they have the experience to apprecaite combat. People who survive it do so by chance, or 'but for the grace of God', if you believe. So I say 'from their couch', while admiring their service in another era.

People go on the freeway and die but they don't do it under the auspices of a 'greater good' or under their coutnry's flag.

Volunteers indeed. But no more or less valuable a life than a conscript. No more or less family at home than a hero in WW2.

No comparisons attempted, other than that a life lost in WW2 is in principle the same as a life lost in the Gulf. That was the point of saying bulets don't discriminate.

I'll always be critical of those who are critical of people deployed against an enemy, even a "second-rate" military like Iraq. I suspect - though I could never truly know - that your veteran family members empathize with those who are deployed in hostile coutnries, depite casual comments they may make while watching "NewsNight".
