It was different before 9/11 because the GI Bill made the armed forces seem more alluring cuz it would pay for poor kids to go to school. But when you sign on, there's always the chance of getting called to active duty overseas. A lot of Pre 9/11 enlistees never concerned themselves with that because it had been quite awhile since Desert Storm. They got a rude awakening on 9/11 though.

If you can show me that the majority of our military has equal intelligence scholastically(or otherwise) as any white collar worker when a large portion of enlistees dropped out of high school, I will get on your knees and suck your tiny dick.

And for the record, I believe the people that fight for our country are heros-but that doesn't mean they signed on exclusively to be in the shit situation they're in today. When I say bottom of the barrell, I mean that they were either too dumb or too poor to take advantage of what this country has to offer in civilian life. The extremely patriotic willing to sacrifice all of the ammenities we Americans take for granted for the sake of patriotism is in the minority. We as a population for the most part are too selfish to give up these things to put ourselves through so much bullshit so others can benefit. A majority of enlisted servicemembers did not know what they were getting themselves into. They were being sold a dream by some recruiter and bought it. Most were not professionally successful before enlisting, like Pat Tillman. That is why Congressman Charlie Rangel, an outspoken black Congressional Representative from NY, has said that we should institute a draft. He has said that the poor and uneducated are targeted for recruitment. This is no secret. He says that an undiscriminating draft would be the great equalizer (demographically).
On the other hand, there are some very fine officers and enlisted men that knew/know what they are getting themselves into. There are those that are patriots that witnessed 9/11 and thought that they could make a difference by enlisting...

By the way, I am married and have kids, and they are amazing. I do sacrifice my personal freedoms to make their life better. I understand why some would not want to forfeit their independence for these things. I find it to be the most meaningful thing that I have ever done.... But, Cracker, please know that I am open to an invite to one of those pool parties...

The other day I heard a kid like you on the radio bitching about the New Lancer OZ they bought him for his 16th B-day. He said he'd rather walk to school than be seen in that piece of shit car. His way of thinking was theat his dad drives an Escalade and his mom drives an S-Class Benz, that he's entitled to a nicer ride-preferably a Lincoln Navigator w/ 24's. He even went so far as to get a petition signed by all of the spoiled brats at school that agree with him-and he doesn't even have a part time job to pay for his ride's gas or insurance. I'll tell you what, I didn't own my 1st car until I was 20 and until then I had to beg to use their old Caddy just to be able to drive to work at a grocery store to pay for the gas and insurance. If I was lucky I could use their shitbox to take a girl out on a date once a week. My high school had about 600 kids old enough to drive and our school's student parking lot had approximately 50 parking spaces to accomodate them, and it was never full. Fuckin' A, at the rate you guys are going if you're not driving a Lamborghini by age 25 you're gonna be so depressed that you're gonna need Prozac just to function in life somewhat normally. That is some funny shit there. My first car was a 1985 dodge charger stick shift. I saved up money from working all summer to buy it for $1,200. Biggest piece of shit but it was mine. I remember I would have to crawl under the car sometimes at stop lights to hook the linkage back onto the gear shift lever when it would fall off. If my kid brought that petition home to me I would rip it up and tell him while living under my roof this no democracy but a dictatorship.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the poor and uneducated (when they possess both qualities) BE the ones going to war? Some of the people from my town that went would either be ringing you up the grocery store, selling drugs, or in jail. I really don't see the point of drafting a college kid who may have a lot to offer the world, or a parent of 2 who obviously has duties at home, especially when there are hoodlums hanging out on corners day and night performing dangerous or illegal activity; and especially since theyre getting a PAID chance to better themselves (with the risk of dieing/being injured).

I'm really not trying to sound insensitive so please offer a counter argument, politely.
