Well, reading isn't really required for studying physics. I mean, you totally can if you have time (and it's recommended), but it's not like it's really of any substantive value when working through countless problem sets. It's usually all about the plug & chug or algebraic manipulations rather than the meaning or concepts at the introductory levels. This is probably the reason many people dislike or can't understand physics courses -- it's just applied math.
