Who has SUCCESSFULLY quit smoking?

Oh man............I'm gonna give it another try. Been smoking 5 years now and i think its TOTALLY disgusting. My hands, clothes and breath stink of smoke and my teeth are turning a "slight " yellow. The insane thing is, its the FIRST THING i do when i wake up in the morning. Before morning cardio, i smoke a few cigs and driving to the gym, i smoke a few as well. I smother myself with Obsession cologne and chew 3 sticks of gum before i even think about setting foot in the gym. My wife and i are smoking appox. 1 1/2 packs a day. Stupidity is what got me started smoking. I trained with a local IFBB pro who smoked like a FIEND and he told me it helped him diet easier(!!!!). I tried "wellbutrin" and it made me naucious as hell. Any suggestions and helpful info is GREATLY appreciated since i wanna stop A.S.A.P. Thanks all!

what smokers are really saying when they have a smoke in their mouth: "Oooh look at me!! I've got a controlled fire hanging from my mouth!" :D

just think about how much more improved your body will be from quitting, improved blood flow, oxygen etc.

plus the increase in appetite:D means easier to take in all the calories.

been smoke (tobacco) free I think for a month now (cold turkey). I've had 3 in that time.

and loving the all the positve changes...

I quit about two years ago... went out and bought 2 cans of cherry skoal. (nastiest crap in the world!) After those, I just quit. It worked, I tried smoking about 6 months ago, and it tasted like crap, couldn't even do it. Cardio kicks ass now, it is definitely worth it!!

Well one of my best friend's mom does hypnotherapy and has had positive results with people wanting to quit. I talked to someone that had it done and she remembers the whole thing but hasn't had a cig or a craving since. Another solution would be a script for zyban. I heard that it has a pretty high success rate. I'm gonna get hypnotized here soon b/c I am tired of it also

I quit cold turkey three years ago. Haven't had one since. Just made up my mind. I was smoking heavy too and had been smoking for 10 years. It was just time for me to quit and I haven't missed it since. I didn't have any real physical problems with withdrawal other than being an absolute son of a bitch for about three weeks. I didn't have cravings for cigarettes though -- I was just short tempered and irritable. So I just ignored it all and went on. However, later on my friends told me they were ready to cram a cigarette down my throat.

Good luck. Everyone's different so, no matter what everyone says, you'll have your own experience with quitting. If you are ready to quit -- you'll quit. It's pretty much that simple.

I quit smoking 3 years ago. I smoked for 7 years. Quiting smoking was the best thing I ever done. I also put on 5 pounds of muscle in a month. It is very hard to quit ,but you have to really want to quit. Maybe these tips can help you.

1. Start jogging outdoors 2 miles per day.

2. Chew gum whenever you are craving a smoke.

3. Do not hang out with people that smoke for at least a month.

4. Keep telling yourself if you don't quit now you will never quit.

Good luck,
Remember it will never get any easier to quit.

I smoked for 14 years straight, 1 - 2 packs a day. Its been 2 years on Dec 23 that i havent had a smoke. It was almost like doing a cycle by itself. I new is was going to blow up like a fat basterd so i started eating very good and working out religiously and everyone at work thought i was on something. I went from 160 to 195 lbs in a years time. Not too much was bf, but there was some around the mid section. My workouts were much more intense and lasted much longer without the smokes, but it takes awhile to notice anything. I just used the patch. For a couple weeks in the beginning i still smoked 2 - 5 cigs a day because the patch wasnt strong enough. I ate alot of long lasting candy to break the habbit part of it. Just got to keep your mind off of it. But i must say the cravings really never go away completly, every now and then i still want one.....esp when drinking!!!!

I used to smoke like a pack a day back in college, but now I just smoke whenever I drink. When I'm not drinking cigarrettes are nasty as fuck to me. Weird huh. But, since I'll be getting pretty f'd up tonight I guess I'll be smoking alot tonight, and I don't mean just cigarettes!LOL.

PS. Just a side note I remembered, I smoke one cigarrette before each football game, seems to bring me luck or something????

Forgot to say, I just quit cold turkey. I just convinced myself that cigarrettes are nasty and they make me sick. I guess I sort of hipnotized myself or something and drinking breaks the spell!??

I remember reading that Alexi lalas(sp?) used to smoke a pack before a soccer game b/c he said it expanded his lungs. Talk about fucked up logic:confused:

I quit cold turkey about 5 years ago.I got sick and started having bad chest pains in the lt. side of my chest. It scared me to the point that I have'nt had one since. I smoked a pack a day for 10 yrs. When you have a craving for one just think about all the people that have died of cancer.I know several myself.

When I was in the Army I started smoking there...about 3 years later when I got out. I quit about 2 months after moving back here. Just lost it's meaning to me I guess. I have a smoke ever so often though, usually when i go out driking with the fellas.

for some they have to quit a few times before they get it right. while nicotine is very hard to quit, eventually you'll be able to break free of it's effects. Cold turkey is the best way to do it, and it'll help greatly if your wife quits too. also know this, don't ever fool yourself into thinking it's okay to have a smoke every now and then after you've quit. once an addict, always an addict. lets say it's been a few months and you've not had a cigarette. So you decide to treat yourself by having one. Trust me on this that in a week or two you'll be buying a pack and you'll be back smoking like you used to. I know because I've been there. I've gone stretches of a year and a half without smoking and then BANG!, one smoke and I'm back in Marlboro Country. Good luck, AND BE STRONG!! It aint easy to quit, but it is possible.

P.S. the best time to start a bulking cycle is when quitting smoking. you'll also have improved endurance, and sense of smell and taste.

I was a smoker for 9 years. I tried to quit a number of times and failed at every attempt. When I finally did quit it was the easiest thing to do. I realised whenever I tried to quit I built it up to be a huge thing and set myself up for failure. It was a lot easier to just think that I was skipping a cigarette and it was no big deal, in the end. The initial first 2/3 weeks are the hardest. But you can make this time easier if you coincide your quitting period with an illness which prevents you from smoking. I had an influenza related throat infection where I physically could not smoke even if I wanted to.

The last big lesson is to never even touch a cigarette, even just to test whether you can still resist it - worst mistake you can make! Final conclusion, you will know when the day comes when you reach the end of your teather and just want to kick the habit and once your off for a while if the temptation ever occurs just contemplate what it would be like to have to go through that whole psychological trauma of stopping again, if you start!!! Ahhh!! ;)

Humilation method

I quite about 15 years ago in an odd way. I found myself able to control my buyiung cigarettes, but not able to resist one if they were around. So I committed to not buying any, and then had to bum them from friends, until my friends started getting pretty angry.

I tapered off pretty quickly.

The most important thing in the first few months is avoiding being around people smoking. That's easy here in California, since smoking hardly allowed anywhere indoors. Stick with the nonsmokers when the others go out to light up.

It's the best thing you can do for yourself, quitting, and as your energy and senses of taste and smell return, you'll be very glad you did. These days, when I see people smoking, I think: "People still DO that??!!"

this worked for me too.

I've quit a long time ago but for some reason i just don't get addicted to things easily so i am able to go long periods of time without cravings. Only thing is, when i have to go for a s**t, i need a cigarette. It's like a laxative for me.

I smoked from the time I was a teen till I was 25 or so........one day I just decided "fuck smoking" and I quit......I think had a few a year later at a wedding, but, that was it......
wasn't hard for me........

I was a pack and a half for about 4 years and then, after three tries quit cold turkey.

My method was to start running again, a lot. I found that retching and vomiting at the end of a run and having to hawk up horrific lungers while trying to impress cute boys (and girls) in the park was a pretty good motivator. The headaches stopped after a week or two, the weight gain after a month or two (luckily, the running helped keep that under control), and the dreams of smoking that left me waking up in a cold sweat trying to remember if'd really done it or not only lasted like 5 years, lol.

Good luck!

this is such a good feeling...

I need to quit, I admit. been on the the Marlboros for like 7 years and I aint even 25 yet! when it happens, it will happen. :(

My friend successfully quit smoking a few months ago. He was telling me how he was going to go outside for a smoke. I called him a dumb bitch addict who was praying for death by age 40. He said that he wasn't addicted and that he smokes because he chooses. I told him bullshit.

What did he do?

Went outside.

Smoked his cigarette.

Came back in.

"Ok, there, I've officially quit smoking."

Mother fucker hasn't had a cigarette in MONTHS.

That's the only way to do it. To hell with those stupid patches and 12 step programs.

I'd rather die of lung cancer than go through the horror of quitting again, which I did about 15 years ago. My motivation -- besides a persistent cough -- was caring for a friend who was dying at the time. There he was having an agonizing death, and he was telling me with his dying breaths that I was an idiot for smoking. It made an impression.

Cold turkey was the only thing that worked for me. I'd made earlier attempts with everything from hypnosis, that horrible chewing gum, some incredibly expensive detox program, etc.

The main thing I suggest -- if you've had a serious longterm habit -- is cutting yourself a LOT of slack. Just give yourself permission to be a hateful s.o.b for a month or two. I was editing a city magazine at the time and basically had to turn it over to my assistant for a month. I couldn't think straight. And then there was the day I put my fist through the wall. I was not pleasant to be around. In fact, friends would leave cigarettes on my doorstep.... I don't drink, either, but quitting that was a piece of cake compared to giving up cigarettes.

Good luck!

Wouldn't something like "rationing" smokes work? Like if you typically smoke 20 or so a day (sounds like a massive number to me, but I'm sure there are people who can look at that and go "20? Lol... pussy"), maybe reduce that number each week until the desire is eventually gone. Like 20 a day first week, 15 a day second week, 10, 4, 5, 3, 2, 1, 0 (lol, looks like a cycle prescription or something).

Or just add up all the money you spend on smokes to shock you into quitting. I calculated my friend's annual spending on cigarettes before he quit. Came out to about $1,500 a year. $1,500 a year into a modest mutual fund = over $2 million bucks by retirement age. Think about it.

I was a 2 pack a day smoker sinceI was 16.....2 years back I quit...pretty much cold-turkey. Yes....I was a bit moody  for a would say about 2 weeks but stuck with it. Do I still crave them......YES!! Every now and then I will break down and have one....especially if I at the bar....or tipping back the beer pretty heavy. Other than that....I have been very committed. :)

It was not an easy thing to do however, and if you are planning on quitting you have to really want it for yourself and not because another person if forcing you into it. My ex for years would "suggest" I quit....and the rebel in me only wanted to have one more.

Best of luck to you~~~

Quit while you are still young. I take care of patients that are dying from lung cancer and emphyzema and it's not pretty to hear or watch them hack and cough up stuff.

I quit 7 1/2 years ago. I was smoking 1 1/2 packs a day and chewing 1- 1 1/2 tins of dip a day. Got an inflamed esophagus 2 times. Dr. said it was from the tobacco use so I got so scared I quit cold.
To help chew lots of sugarless gum. It keeps your mouth occupied.

Haven't smoked for a month. I've quit several times before....for lengthy times I might add....but they all resulted in me gaining umpteen pounds. But this time....hopefully.....I will be good and quit forever.....I can't stand the smell or the taste...funny huh?

Doing good......I don't even want one....well once in a while I do......

I have pretty bad asthma and I guarantee if you ever felt what it is like to not be able to breath you would quit.

My sister is a nurse and she was telling me some lady in the hospital had throat, mouth, and lung cancer from smoking. The woman's throat was literally rotting away. She said it was so bad that when you got off the elevator on the floor the woman was on you could smell her cancer, she said it was the worst thing she had ever smelled.

My asthma is bad enough that I know it will kill me someday, and all you people were born with perfect lungs and don't give a shit.

i smoked a pack of marlboro's a day for bout 3 years. i slowly weened off and haven't smoked in about 2 and a half years. shit makes me sick.

Funny as that is exactly what happened to Kronk. He smoked for years and then just flat out quit. He hasnt smoked in about 8 years.....well cigs that is....lol

I've been smoking for 7 years, and I'm 25. However, today is my first day of no smoking. It's 2:13 in the afternoon... the longest I have gone without a smoke in a day in over a year. It doesn't seem like night time will ever come. I'm an idiot for starting in the first place. I just think of what fyrewoman said... I mean, you figure 3 days of ABSOLUTE hell, and then about 2 more weeks of hell. To a dying lung cancer patient, 2 weeks would be nothing. But, once you're there, it's already too late... and the grim reaper is near your bedside, while you breathe through an oxygen tank, talk through your throat, cough consistently, bring turmoil to your family and loved one's because of your selfish habit. Plain and simple. Once I go two weeks without a smoke, I'll be so pissed at myself for not quitting sooner. Plus, if I have one now, my 5 year old daughter is going to whoop me. She has been begging me to quit. I quit about two years ago, and didn't have a smoke for about 4 months. It's true what testboy said... once you have ONE... you are back in Marlboro Country. I remember I would start buying those single cig's... this only leads to a pack, and your pursuit of an agonizing, self inflicted death. Self inflicted... that would be pretty hard to swallow while you are going through radiation and everything else under the sun, while all along your loved one's even hurt worse than yourself.

Smoking is a fucking incredibly stupid, incredibly hard to quit habit... But damn brothers... think of how many people die per year for the sole reason that they didn't have enough will and determination to suffer for about two weeks to kick their habit. Think of what they felt like when their doctor told them what smoking has done to them, what deadly disease they were going to die from, all because of smoking. It's not fucking worth it.

Check out www.smellypukinghabit.com... if that doesn't scare you enough, go to a hospital, and see for yourself what you will face in just a matter of time. I'm absoultely done with them. Damn, I'm going to be one moody asshole for a while.

I have the nicorette gum by the way... and Musclebrain's is right... it tastes like aboslute shit. I've only had one piece so far today... It does give you a pretty wicked buzz. I think it will help.
My bong is also VERY helpful when it comes to quitting smokes. A joint would probably be even better to fix the oral fixation... But dope definately helps... And, given the choices of quitting dope or cig's... well, hands down... smoke's suck.

Think about what smoking means to your life... then you will only be left with one choice. Good luck brother.

I was the same as her, except I was a pack a day smoker. What a fucking waste of cash that was.

I quit in 1991 cold. Just stopped. I really enjoyed smoking too. But the mornings were the worst, cough till I puked. Said enough was enough and never did it again.
