Which Is Better Post-Workout While Dieting? Dextrose-Maltodextrin/Whey? Or Real Food?

Guys, in YOUR opinion, which is better to have post-workout while dieting to reach single digit bodyfat levels? A Dextrose-Maltodextrin/Whey shake? Or Chicken Breast/Egg Whites/Tuna and Oatmeal/Rice/Sweet Potato? The reason why I ask is I see alot of diets top level amateurs and pro's use and not one of them included a Dextrose-Maltodextrin/Whey shake. One even said they do NOT take in any sugar while dieting to keep his insulin levels stable to get leaner, which kind of made sense. Opinions please...

yo bro we have to toss the bodybuilding mythology in the trash can. i recently started drinking oj post workout and couldnt be happierwith the results. im leaning down and muscles feel tight and hard.. thats what this game is about. and i feel good all the time

I say shakes, you want an easily digestiable, high carb/sugar moderate protein drink. Real food would work except it needs to be broken down, which causes more energy and takes more time.

as SC said it "just because you are dieting, it does not mean the need for fast acting carbs PWO disappears."

I've had better results gaining LBM by using a combo of eggs, waffles, and a tall glass of milk

The ideal PWO, which is what I use, consists of:
1 scoop of concentrate
1 scoop of isolate
30g of dextrose (moderate depending on how big you are).

I load these three components into a little tiny shaker bottle I bought at a grocery store. Then I fill it from the water fountain as I leave the gym and chug it down.

Listen to your body, we're all different. Not to mention, what those guys say to the magazines is probably less that half of what they put in thier body. If they admitted to anything else they'd have a summons.

Checkout the Window of Opportunity article here:

Its a great read - but to sum it up it says to go with a whey shake + 50/50 mix of Maltodextrin and Dextrose + 2 liters of water. 50g whey and 100g of the sugar mix (50g if you are cutting). To prevent too big a spike you should take about half the shake right after the workout and then sip on the rest over about a 30 min period. After the 30min period you should consume some whole food.

Thats to gain mass...
what about if you just cutting?

cut the dose in half if you are cutting 50g total.

Doesnt matter how much you weight? and how much weight you want to loose?

Sorry - forgot to post that info.

Its recommended that if you are cutting you take in a quarter of your body weight in grams of carbs. So if you weigh 200lbs and you are cutting then you should take in 50g. The rest of your diet should be adjusted for this if you have daily target of carbs/total calories.

Personally I also scale the amount of carbs based on the intensity of my workout - if I absolutely kill myself I take the 50g, if I don't feel completely wasted I scale it back a bit.

Are you calculated carbs in PWO by your bodyweight. Never heard that. Always read 2:1 ratio, if your cutting cut sugars in half.

So, if Im cutting cut the sugar in half? that means cut my carbs in half since dex or malt is all sugar

Yup - check out the article referenced above. For cutting it recommends that you take in a quarter of your bodyweight in carbs and protein after your workout, half immediately and the other half sipped over the next 30-60 minutes...along w/ about 2 liters of water. This will get your glycogen back to normal levels without a huge spike.

truth is...whatever works for you......you think 99% of the pros take a shake immidiately after training? Umm...no........

First meal immediately following the workout should be a shake, and then a real food meal about 1 1/2 hours later with a similar macro nutrient breakdown. I tend to drop the amount of carbs though in the whole food meal as compared to the amount I have in the shake.

did the PWO malto/dex/whey for a while, then switched to whey/oatmeal and found it to work much better for me. muscles feel full and hard. overall body feeling improved. no crash like i used to get with the malto/dex. i dont reccomend blending the dry protein though, adds a gritty/grainy texture to the shake which is gross IMO.. instead i just cook the oats and eat them seperately after i pound the whey. pain in the ass, but i've feel great

what you mean by "crash" when used to get with the malto/dex?

shortly after i drank the malto/dex/whey after workouts, it would make me a little light headed, then about a half hour later, i would start to feel really tired.. also i'd have an insane apetite about 1 hr afterwards. the oats dont do that to me
