which exercise is the best overall guage of total body strength???

i remember reading an article many years ago in mm2k. shawn phillips said that it was the deadlift. i wish it was true as my deads are great and my benching is horrible. he wrote that instead of people bragging about their benches, they should be comparing their deads. maybe he was a pussy bencher like me?? ;)
 
I think the clean n' jerk or snatch would be it.

Maybe Clean and Press for us BBers...

Clean and press is too much momentum.

I'd vote that it is not a single exercise - that's why PL competitions are often driven by three lifts - flat bench, dead, and squat.

SQUAT!!!

But I'm biased because I'm king of that exercise around my gyms. Yes that was plural.

Deads are a close second, IMHO.

deadlift, involves more muscles doing much work than anything else. squats don't have all body doing working, but affects whole body.
 
I would have to say Deadz 2, it is a total body movement, evey muscle is pretty much involved to either lift the weight or stabilize the body.
 
Atlas stones. Forget all the gym stuff. Deads and squats do nothing for my pecs and delts. Benching does little for my quads etc.
