Which BJJ school would you chose?

I am going to check out Yamasaki in Rockville, MD tonight. What I like about Capitol JJ is that they have a few classes per month that focus mainly on striking and takedowns. I may also check out Lloyd Irvine

I singed up with Yamasaki last night. Prices are about 2x higher than everywhere else, but i feel like I learned more in the time I was there. All of the instructors are black belts and they have several purples and browns there helping out. All of the instructors there seem like great guys as well. They also give you the option of taking MT classes as well so I think I will get into that once a week. Plus they work a lot of take downs and take down defense. Looking forwards to it.

i train at a gracie network academy here in west virginia....great bunch of guys, we train every aspect of fighting. i have to tell you though, the best way to answer your question is to sample both of them more than once. maybe a week at one, then a week at another. i would think the 2nd has a leg up being that there's a Black Belt instructor there at all times. (my 2 cents!) but seriously, go visit, and talk with some of the fighters. it's not all about the training, fighting, sweating....these are people you will be spending alot of time with. get out there and make the decision yourself! have fun...let us know!

Hey fellas I am living on Long Island, New York and I just started taking BJJ at Mat Serra's school he is the first american awarded the black belt and is part of the Renzo Gracie Team...tough guy and hell of a teacher. Gracie Instruction is the way to go.

Anything Gracie.

That's not that simple anymore. What I find here in Southern Cal is that the Gracie schools don't do anything different than the "other/discount" schools, except charge waaay too much. I used to train at Fabio Santos, an original "Gracie Train" guy, and it was like $160/month. Then I went to Roy Harris for less than half the price, and thought I actually learned more too. So don't just blindly choose a Gracie sponsored school, a LOT more people know BJJ now, and teach it cheaper. It's nothing like the early 90's where basically the only people that knew BJJ were named Gracie.

Helio Gracie style schools only.
Rorion has one in California and Pedro Valente has one in Miami.
They both start sparring standing up. They both work on strikes and takedowns.
These are the BEST schools in the U.S.A.
There is also one in Rio.
If ever in the areas be sure to check it out.
Try to spar one of their better students - ha ha.
They will also allow you to spar with strikes, no gloves, etc if you need to be convinced.
They will put you up against a small guy to embarrase you.
If you can get past the humiliation - you will get hooked.

The gracies are human, just like anyone else. Some of them are good, some are bad...NONE of them are at the top of the BJJ world right now. DOn't fall for the BS learn from the "PURE WATERS" marketing BS Rorion blabs about... he is nothing more than a money hungry businessman. His actions speak volumes about his characters- he has sued his own brothers and cousins for using the name "GRACIE JIUJITSU" since he trademarked it, despite them being gracies as well, so they had to use their full names. His net worth is well over a million. The torrance academy is the most expensive BJJ school in the country, and he gets away with it because he marketed himself well with Royce when no one here knew BJJ (but there were plently of fighters in brazil that would've destroyed royce at the time). If the pure waters are so great, why did Royce NEVER place in the top 3 in bjj tournaments? Why has it taken them over 15 years to produce one american blackbelt? Why did Royce get raped and choked unconcious by Wallid Ismael in 99 who is a good but not elite, and SMALLER bjj guy? Why in the few tournaments they have competed in, did the torrance academy BJJ guys get slaughtered? Why hasn't there been a single champion (BJJ or MMA) to come out of the torrance academy (Rorion-Helio...Royce left there awhile back same with Caique the best guy there, why? for very good reason) ... if that isn't enough, watch Rorion's eldest son, Ryron, get clowned at the Las Vegas Grappler's Quest this saturday in his superfight with marc laimon. Most of the Gracies have caught up with the times (Renzo, Rodrigo, Ralph etc.) but the "helio style" (Rorion's) have not. The other gracies have put out top guys, Rorion has not. And there are plenty of non gracies that have produced many champions in both mma and bjj.

Nothing against the gracies, they introduced a wonderful style and sport to the world, but don't base your decision on a school by a friggin name. And also remember that being in an association (whether it be the RG association, Relson Gracie assoc. Nova Unaio etc. only means that the school pays a monthly membership fee to use the name, and will have periodic seminars involving people from that association). Just visit the schools, take a few classes and decide for yourself. Ask questions,
