Whey Protein Question

Elementality

New member
Are all whey proteins the same in quality? I know some have different mixes, but are the differences worth the attention? Basically, is cheap whey protein gonna give you the same results as expensive whey protein?

I see the expensive whey protein has in its ingredients "A sustained Release Ultra Premium Comprised of (Ulta filtered whey protein conentrate [Milk] rich in Alpha Lacalbumin, Microfiltered whey protein isolate [milk] Rich in Whey isolate peptide fractions, Calcium Caseinate...etc etc etc...

The cheap whey protein just says "Whey protein isolate etc. simple stuff

Now, the expensive stuff tastes 100x better than the cheap stuff <no more sugar, slightly more calories but thats it>. Should I interpret this great taste and "super" ingredients to give me better muscle growth? Or does the cheaper stuff do the same thing.

If the higher quality is worth the bigger price, then please tell me where I can get high quality, good tasting protein at a reasonable price. The only place i can find good stuff is GNC and its expensive.

I think you may be looking at the marketing a little too much. I am not sure what you mean by cheap. Basically anything with WPI is good.

As you may know, WPI is Whey Protein Isolate. It is your "fast" protein. Good to take before and right after you train.

Whey Protein Concentrate and egg are the longer lasting proteins as in to take at night when you sleep.

Depends what you want in a protein I guess. I use them both. Long as it is Whey I would think your ok

I dont buy at GNC anymore. To expensive. The only perk with buying there is you can return a protein if it tastes bad and I have seen price doesnt mean anything in regards to taste. Prosource's NytroWhey is ok for taste. MetRx I thought was like ALPO

I take a good blend of concentrate/isolate like ATW's blend or ON's gold standard. Whey is whey as long as the fat content and carbs arent too high. Isolates have less carbs and fat, they are further refined than concentrates. -DOC

I agree with the marketing comment. Elementality, you are posting a lot on BSN products and just beware, they use tons of attractive language to market their product. Most of their products are average at best. The Syntha 6 tastes great but so does their Lean Dessert protein. But they are both just any old whey if you ask me as far as results. The Lean Dessert made me a little fat in fact. I used Axis-HT about 2 years back and it did nothing for me whatsoever. The cell mass is just overpriced creatine and glutamine. The only product I liked by them was NO-xplode, and that opinion has changed over the last few months.

Ok, considering all thats been said. Whats the best protein for me if i like the taste of syntha 6? I know their products are overpriced, but until i can find a protein drink that is that good, im gonna haveta keep buying it off them :P

Isolate simply means they have 'Isolated" a higher % of pure protein in the mix and removed more of a % of the fat and carbohydrate from the raw whey.

Whey concentrate just means that the amount of fat/carb that have been removed is a bit less than with the Isolate. So Concentrate will have more fat/carb per oz.

Raw Whey is Raw Whey generally speaking with the major brands, just more protein per pound in the Isolate than in the Concentrate or than in the Whey Protein powder. At least you used to be able to buy bulk Whey powder that hadn't been concentrated at all. HOLY FARTS AND SHITS..

If you are thinking "Hey, I'm OK with the extra carbs and fats since its so cheap per pound", remember you will need to eat more of it to get the same amount of Protein.

I buy the higher priced Isolate or better blends and take less of it per serving.
Getting the same Grams of protein and saving the empty fat and carb calories for real food.

Look at the label and the serving size and compare the grams FAT, CARB and protein vs the cost per serving to figure out which is better for your body and wallet. Oh and making sure it doesn't taste like dirt is important as well.

Yes, I understand that but comparing 22 grams of protein for 30 dollars/6 lb to same carbs same fat 22 grams of protein that sells for much more i have to think the quality of concentrate or the quality of isolate ( the way they filter it ) must be better. Ive heard some say that this usually means more ammino acids/muscle growth chemistry for the more expesnive ones? or is it ALL marketing? or is it somewhere between

If you want just protein than you should stay away from stuff like Syntha 6. It is a blend of protein fat and carbs. Whether you buy whey isolate or concentrate or a mixture of the 2, you get what you pay for. It depends on your needs, if you just want extra protein than go with the concentrate, if you need something that is absorbed faster for pre workout or post, or your system has some problems absorbing the large amounts of protein that athletes take in, than you might want to go with the isolate.

Ahh OK now I see.
If you are saying that the label on 2 brands says both are equal per serving.
Among the major brands that have been verified as actually containing these amounts in their products. I would say the Whey powder is probably all the same quality and will give you the same results. As long as we are just talking about plain whey powder with no additional supplements added.

Verify they both are using the same serving size(oz) for that 22 grams of protein(and scoop sizes vary, so notice the actual oz used as a serving)

Higher price may be due to simple Marketing hype for the brand or better flavors

Or additional supplements that have been added to the mix vs just whey.
ON is an example of this, as they add extra stuff into the GOLD Standard mix
and therefore charge more as do many others..

Some people that just want whey swear by the store brands and say they do just fine.
