Dnepropetrovsk Travel Guide
[edit this]

The city of Dnipropetrovsk (a calque of Ukrainian spelling) or Dnepropetrovsk (Russian spelling) is situated on the Dnieper River. It's population is over 1.05 million (third city in Ukraine by population).

The best time to visit Dniepr is May when the city is blooming along the wide and slow-moving river and its embankments, long boulevards and spacious parks.

Dniepr is also known for its high-technology industries, higher education institutions, machine-building, metallurgy and trade.

The city is not only famous for its commercial industry, but for its deep history as well.

The old fortress settlement has been known since the mid 16th century. The new town was started in 1776 by Russian Prince Potemkin on an order of Catherine II, Empress of the Russian Empire and was called Yekaterinoslav from 1776 to 1926. During 1918 the town’s name was Sicheslav after Sich’ (Fortress of Cossacks).

Dnipropetrovsk has been the major center of the steel industry from the early 20th century up to the present. It has also gained the lead in the machine building and aero-spacebuilding from 1950s.

Dnipropetrovsk was closed for foreigners in the Soviet era, due to its rocket plant. For visitors now the rocket museum is one of the highlights. Rockets are laid out in sections in the car park. Other sights include the history museum, the musical fountain.

To the south of the Waffen-SS, Vatutin took advantage of the lack of opposition in front of him to push his troops tirelessly forward. The Sixth Army, with two tank corps, two infantry corps and a cavalry corps, raced for the Dnieper crossing at Dnepropetrovsk, while Lieutenant-General M.M. Popov's Front Mobile Group of four tank corps pushed south, aiming for Krasnoarmeiskoye and the Sea of Azov.

Overestimating the capabilities of his SS troops, Hitler ordered them to attack southeast to close the gap with the First Panzer Army. Two groups were formed for the operation. A strong covering force was to remain around Kharkov under the command of Das Reich, which also included the Leibstandarte's 2nd Panzergrenadier Regiment and elements of the division's Tiger tank company, artillery and flak regiments. Hausser's corps headquarters and the Grossdeutschland Division also remained in the city, along with the 298th Infantry Division.
Kampfgruppe Peiper

The covering force fought an increasingly desperate defensive battle, and the frontline had to be pulled back to free troops for the coming operation to the south of the city. By 12 February, the Soviet VI Guards Cavalry Corps had punched a hole in the line separating the Leibstandarte from the 320th Infantry Division. Surrounded and burdened with thousands of wounded men, the army division needed help fast. A kampfgruppe was formed under SS-Sturmbannführer Joachim Peiper, then commander of the 2nd Panzergrenadier Regiment's armoured personnel carrier battalion, to rescue the division. He was given a column of ambulances and a detachment of StuG III assault guns for the mission. The kampfgruppe punched through the Russian front after destroying several tanks, and pushed 48km (30 miles) behind enemy lines to find the beleaguered infantry division. After loading up the ambulances, Peiper's men headed back to German lines, but a Soviet ski battalion had moved into place to block their path and destroy the main bridge over the River Udy, which the Waffen-SS column had to cross to return to Kharkov. The Waffen-SS kampfgruppe attacked and cleared out the Russians in house-to-house fighting, before repairing the bridge for the ambulances.

After the end of World War II, Peiper and other members of the Waffen-SS were tried for war crimes in the Malmedy massacre trial. Peiper volunteered to take all the blame if the court would set his men free: the court refused. Peiper was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, as were many of his men. Peiper later requested that his men be shot by firing squad and was denied.

After the trial, the sentences created a big turmoil in some German circles, including the Churches, leading the commander of the US army in Germany to commute some of the death sentences in life imprisonment. The main reason for that, however, were probably the protests of the Germans' defense attorney in the case, that is American military attorney Lt. Col. Willis M. Everett, who petitioned US Supreme Court claiming that defendants were found guilty on the ground of "illegal and fraudulently procured confessions" and were subjects of a mock trial. His claims raged a big scandal. This turmoil would soon be relayed in the United States where the Senate would eventually investigate the case.

In its investigation of the trial, the Senate’s Subcommittee of Committee on armed services came to the conclusion that improper pre-trial procedures (including mock trial, but not torture as sometime stated) had harmed the process and, although in some cases there was little or no doubt that the accused were indeed guilty of the massacre, the death sentences could hardly be applied.[1]

At the end, the sentences of the Malmedy defendants were commuted to life and then to time served, and Peiper was released on parole from prison at the end of December 1956, after serving 11 and a half years.

After release Peiper eventually went to live in Traves, Haute-Saône, France, and supported himself as a translator. Following explicit death threats, Peiper was killed in a fire bomb attack on his house on July 13, 1976. The attackers were never prosecuted, but were suspected to be former French Résistants.
