I am trying to decide if I should blow off going to a gym and buy a home gym instead I have the room. So please answer my poll and then give any advantages or disadvantages of each?

I didnt vote cause I workout at a golds...some think its pretty hardcore, some think its a country club. Personally I think it depends on what time you go there and a few other factors...its alright but its no iron pit.

i don't see a difference between hardcore, and what you call fluffy gyms, either one is fine with me if they both have good machines, free weights etc....i just try to stay away from crowds of people so i don't have to wait for a machine. just depends on what you like. and home gyms? i had a little set up when i first started, and it sucks....limited to what you can buy, how much room you have, were your going to put it, family distractions, plus you can't get out and see other people.

I like a home gym, but although mine is well equipped it will never have everything I want. You have to think about that before you start a home gym. Will you spend $1000 or $2000 or more and then say F--- it I`ll go to the gym then your money`s gone collecting dust.

Also my basement is 17ft x 25ft and it`s not enough space. I don`t even have a squat rack/power cage! lol But when it`s raining and snowing and freezing out you don`t even have to start your car.

If you HAVE TO use certain machines at the gym then you should research thier cost first before venturing into it. Also very important if you wo at home by yourself you won`t have a spotter. I miss that and don`t do certain exercises or push as hard due to that.
Well that`s my experience hope it helps. good luck btw do you have a ballpark of what you`ll spend $ for a home gym? big factor

Home and away

I train at my Thai-boxing-wrestling gym; it has all the free weights and all the machines; there is not much of a waiting period as there is a high turn over rotation between weights and ring fighting work.

I also have a custom home gym with power squat rack, heavy duty bench machine, calf machine, and a custom made chin up bar with weight strap equipment for those weighted chins.
And a full set of free weights ranging from 30lb to 300lbs dumbbells (LOL the 300lb dumbbell is never used though for obvious reasons ehe)
I am lucky as my girlfriend's father is a local gym equipment manufacturer/wholesaler so I get an uber discount; I doubt I could afford the above full priced.

The home gym equipment is handy for my 4.00 am workouts as I have to drive to work at 6am to the city.
The Boxing gym equipment is there just in case I miss my morning workout; as I go there every night for ring fighting and sparring anyway.

I'm looking at houses right now. One of the main criteria that I'm looking for is a 3(or 4) car garage, a barn, or a guest house. Any of these 3, I can turn into a dungeon.

As far as money goes, lifting is more important to me than say...having a nice car or other expensive toys. So, the money I would've put into a new truck, I could put into a pretty good gym for me and my buddies. If I get enough space(big barn or guest house), I want to build a full-size ring as well as a mat area.:p

I think lifting in an area you built to your own personal specs is far superior to lifting at someone else's gym, with a bunch of people.

And you could blast Hardcore death metal as loud as you want:)

I workout at Bally's, but I have some weight equipment at home for my light days. I don't do cardio in the gym because I am short on time..At home I jog on my treadmill, use my stationary bike, or rollerblade. I'm a girl so that doesn't really matter to you, huh? :D j/k

My hubby trains at Bally's, too, but his biggest gripe is not finding weights in the gym that are heavy enough especially dumbbells. When we can afford it I think he will build a shed and stock it up with racks and stuff. I think working out at a gym and having your own equipment evens it out plus if you are unable to go to the gym you can still manage to w/o at home.

I workout at golds, its a yuppy gym though but its clean and alot of equipment. my contract will be ending in a few months though and its a 20-25 min drive so I hate to put my mom through that 3-4days a week especially when she has nothing to do down there. Looked into a Y pass today, Pros are, A) Closer, I could pratically run there. B) Friend to workout with. C) They play better music, I went with my friend and they had eminem on, something with alittle more beat and better to workout too. Cons A) No powerrack, wtf is that? NO POWERRACK? B) I still have to pay off my golds membership, I payed a few months then my parents took over the payments so I'd hate to make them pay if I am not gonna finish my year there, I offered to pay them back and most likely will come March or May when I get a job. C) 20-25 minute drive, hate to put my mom through that 3-4 times a week. D) They play shitty music, they put 10-12 songs on a cd and loop it for months on end and then when they think its been played out , they change it to another crappy cd for a few months. I mean who the fuck wants to listen to wheres your head at 5 times or more in a single workout? I know I don't.

What do you guys think, do the Pros outweight the cons? In my opinion they do, Cause the Y is closer and I can workout with a friend, but they have alot less equipment but everything one would need to stay fit and healthy. Pretty much everything but that powerrack!

get them to buy one. get a bunch of people to start asking for one

Yea, thats all they need is a 16 yr old telling them to buy a powerrack, I went in today and their putting a mirror on the back wall and placing a rubber mat over the whole weight room floor. Maybe I will be able to touch the floor with deads now, or do violent shurgs. : )

I'd say my gym is more hardcore than fluffy...just lots of iron and a hand full of treadmills and bikes. But I only picked this one cause it was the cheapest and had everything I wanted...cept some cute ladies...that would help motivate me to show up on those days when I'm just not into it. Unless you have mad cash to blow, there's no way you can compete with a gym at home...just too much variety at the gym. I like working out with other people around too...keeps me from getting bored...as long as it doesn't get in the way of doing what I want to do.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. I didn't spend all that much over the last few years on my home gym. How many ways can you overhead press, squat, deadlift and bench? After the core compound movements, everything else is just additional lifts to totally kill the muscle. (IMO.) Plus, I have rope, tires, chains, etc laying around to experiment with. I don't think a lot of gyms will let you do that.

No, I can't leg press at home, but I can hack squat. With a power cage you can do pretty much anything the machines will do for you.

Machines are nice sometimes, but to me anyway, they are not as nice as having a home gym.

I train at the University gym, so not very hardcore at all! However, when I go home for breaks, I train at this small gym that isnt really hardcore, but definitely not fluffy either. Lots of weights and bars and racks, only a couple machines, and the only cardio equipment is an old exercise bike that lays in a corner on its side.
