When you're in the gym.....

how much aggression do you show?

for me, it depends on what i'm doing. for my 5x5 exercises, i'm pretty damn aggressive, and i vocalize it sometimes. i growl while lifting, sometimes i curse and swear, sometimes i talk to the weights in an unfriendly manner, and when i miss a lift, i can get ultra pissed and sometimes let a few obscenities fly out. (i missed a BB curl one day and i think i yelled "fuck" 3 times at the bar, i was mad).

my partner thinks i'm crazy. and today, he insulted me.

normally i do my deads 4x5, 1x10. my partner usually does the same. we were working 215 today.

i step up for the last set. by the 4th rep, my eyes are closed, i'm gritting my teeth, i'm probably spitting everywhere, my head is thrown back...and i'm kicking that bar's ass. i pull up the 10th rep and i hold it. i give 10 deep, hard breaths while holding the bar up. at this point, my grip has said "goodnight" and i throw down the bar. we've got an oly lift platform and rubber coated weights, so it's not like i'm tearing the place up. i've dropped the bar plenty of times at the end of the last set. sometimes i throw it down to show it who is who's bitch.

we finish off our workout and go to do abs. basically, he tells me i'm an attention whore in the gym. personally, i don't give a fuck what everyone else thinks of me. i'm in there busting my ass. the things i say and noises i may make are pure aggression flowing out. i'm pumped up. plus i've noticed that it takes my mind off of what i'm doing.

i'm not the asshole that's CONSTANTLY shouting and yelling. i do it as necessary.

Im insulted by your Avatass..... jk bro, haha

Oh fuck ya i swear a lot, but i dont throw weights around... yelling is fun too when your doin a lot of weight.. Giddy Up!

no offense but I usually bust out laughing when I hear someone grunting, swearing and yelling where everyone can hear. Just dont see the need personally.

and before anyone ask I lift just as heavy if not heavier then the next person without doing so.

not offended at all Bigdawg. i started this thread to see what everyone else does.

i just get caught up in what i'm doing and most of the time i don't even think about it. but i do NOT do it for attention.

nothing wrong with a bit of noise, its not a fucking church, and if it helps and isnt to loud and disturbing others go for it

A little heavy breathing here and there. Sometimes a little grunts slips out on the last set but basically the gym is the only place where I am silent. :qt:

no i don't show my butt while i'm lifting. i save that for here :mommakin:

i'll admit i do get louder sometimes than i should. but the LAST thing i do it for is attention.

fuck the haters in my gym. i'm making more progress than they are anyway. hell, i'm making progress....most of them aren't.

Me too. Theres this one guy at my gym who grunts on every friggin rep from 1 to 10 lol..the first time i saw him i looked over i thought someone was moving some heavy ass weight he was doing d-bell presses with 40's..I wouldnt poke fun at someone b/c they arent strong but normally maybe you grunt out the last rep or 2 not this guy and hes real loud lol

I'm relatively quiet. At the most I'll grunt a little bit on the last few reps of squats or deadlifts. People who are too aggressive in the gym annoy me. There was a brother in my gym today who I see fairly frequently that growls during his sets. He was doing incline curls and growling on most of the reps. If you're not a growler and don't make much noise, growlers and screamers are pretty annoying. It's disrupting during your set when someone near you is making noise like that. For me it throws off the timing and flow of my reps when someone else is screaming and grunting their way through their set at a different tempo. Some people are so loud that even my mp3 player won't drown it out.

I hate when people slam the bar on each rep of a deadlift. Same thing goes for dropping the bar from waist-height after the last rep. During the set I think you should control the weight enough that you can touch and go off the floor, not slam and bounce off it. After the last rep, no matter how exhausted I am, I make a big effort to lower the bar as slowly as possible and not drop it on the ground. I've never seen anyone in my gym use the weight I use on deads, but I still don't care to draw attention to myself to the point where people probably think that I think I'm some sort of bad ass.

I hear ya supersize..People will learn when finally get to heavy deads and injure themselves from the reverberation of the bar!!! I lift from the floor and generally just touch and go..

i touch and go with deads. sometimes i have to actually put it down and get my grip again in the middle of the set. i don't bounce it though.

only time it's ever dropped/thrown is on the last set, and that's not even an all the time thing.

i'm pretty quiet....cept for maybe for some straining/growling on my hardest reps.

in between, i pretty much pace around, or sit, or dance, or air drum/guitar.

jerky, you put it more correctly for what i do. as 5x5 has gotten harder for me, every rep is hard, and that's why the straining/growling/talking to the weights has been happening more and more. it's not every rep for me, unless it's a weight that i've gotta work sets with that's damn heavy (heavy relative to the lifter....i'm sure a lot of you warm up with what i work).

on leg day, i do a set of squats, march to the water fountain, get a drink, go back, stretch a little, go at it again. i don't look at anyone and i'm usually really fired up. for some reason leg day really gets my adrenelin flowing.

i've been seen pacing back and forth between sets too. sometimes i'll pace back and forth, then sit down on the bench with my head in my hands conjuring up some demons to assist me through the next set. works pretty good

About the only time I get really vocal is when I'm pulling a big number on deads or a heavy zercher.

im super quiet except sometimes on my lsat rep of my last set ill go grrrowl.

i agree with bigdawg, i always bust a nut laughing if i hear someone screaming.

theres a couple of people who yell so fucking loud...and it seems like they just started (based on their weight) nd they have thier personal trainor and everything...i find it rediculous

It is not the ones that yell/growl the more that lift the heaviest weights :supercool

heavy is relative to the person lifting though, remember that.

i do have some anger issues that i never sorted out. maybe that's got something to do with me being a bit more vocal that i should be. i dunno. i do know that if i didn't put so much into lifting, i'd probably snap and kill someone sooner or later. great aggression release for me, and believe me, i need that release. i have days where all i do is picture someone in my head that i'd love to kill with my bare hands. that's all i'll see in my head. and in my mind, every rep is just more flesh i'm tearing off of them. every completed set is another limb ripped clean from their body. every increase in weight is more blood being drained from their dying body.

i've been told i need anger management classes. i have no clue why people have told me that.

Only time i really make any sounds are on my leg extension - leg press pre exhaust/super sets. and deadlifts. other than that i mostly just make terrible faces.

growling and grunting doesn't bother me as long as you're actually going all out....

i hate when dudes growl and shit on every set when at the end of the set it's obvious they aren't exhausted....my favorite tool is this guy who got a spot for skulls...he was yelling the whole set and after he was done, he got up and told his spotter "Man, my tris are so ripped right now.."

i almost shit my pants

I have to admit I get loud in the gym, but then I work out at home so it doesn't bother anyone. For the most part I just grunt, but when I go heavy I do get vocal, especially with chins and deads.
