When punishing kids --- go wrong

Dad upset at kid's xbox obsession (I guess he rather be outside hanging with gangs like in la).

He takes his xbox. Soccer Parents around the world applaud! Taking away xbox's is all the rage!

Kid runs away. Now he's been missing for 9 days and family is crying.

Well done super dad. Pack his knapsack again next time.

----

"I told him he wouldn't be getting his Xbox back. He said, `Then I'm going to leave home.'"

Steve called his son's bluff and even helped him pack his knapsack.

"I really thought he would be home later that day with his tail between his legs," said Steve, who remembers running away from home once when he was a boy.

I bet this kid is a god to teenage nerds the world over. Gaming forums probably have threads stickied in his honor.

Holy Christ those parents are scenile. "I'm worried he has met someone online through this game. It could be organized crime or someone involved in Internet gambling. Pedophiles can stalk kids through these games," the tormented father said in an interview last night.

And a 15 yr old? According to the ESRB he's too young to be playing this game! See what happens?
I smell a lawsuit somewhere, somehow.

lol uh, the dad did the right thing. Your the parent, you can't let your child threaten you into not punishing them. If the kid - the tenth grader - ran away as a result, that sucks balls, but if his dad had given into the threat he would have lost all authority as the parent. Clearly, if the boy ran away because of his xbox, he NEEDED to have that thing taken from him. Unfortunate incident, but dad's not to blame.

If he was doing his job the kid wouldn't be cocking off like that. It sounds like a pretty undisciplined household.
Of course, Xbox Live is all the rage now so there's no telling what could happen!

This never would have happened if the kid would have gotten his ass kicked a few times earlier in life....

+1. This isn't limited to a physical beatdown though. It could also be mental. Kids have to be reigned in at an early age to the point where they are obedient to their parents. Clearly this was never accomplished by the parents in this case. Once they become teenagers it's pretty much too late and they'll most likely learn the hard way when they're on their own, and even then it will take a lot longer to learn, if they do at all. You can look at adults' behavior and easily decipher which of them have had this type of discipline instilled in them as a child.

Parents are chickenshit of giving their children any form of discipline anymore, consequently kids grow up thinking the world owes them everything and should kiss their asses to boot. It's as much a parental failure to be too lenient as it is to be too strict.

Unfortunately, in this parents case, it's probably too little, too late and applied at the wrong time. He should never have given the kid the fucking Xbox to begin with (I fucking hate video games).

TITCR, except for the last sentence. :)

Dude, what the fuck happened to you when you were a kid that has made you so miserable?

He's not miserable, he's just cynically lashing out at those lesser than him for being stupidheads. Which is most of the country these days.

That's relevant how????

This kid ran away....because of his xbox.

We're not talking about some deeply troubled kid who got into serious trouble. he played too many video games, dad put his foot down, he - FIFTEEN YEAR OLD perfectly capable of being held accountable for his own actions - RAN AWAY. Over an XBOX. Not drugs, not gangs, not crime...and did I say it's "always" the kids fault? No, don't think I did. I said in this case, yeah. he's a selfish little prick for putting his parents through that.

And why is this post addressed at me anyway? Did you notice that EVERYONE else in the thread agreed with me? Right, ok.

Yeah, about 10 years too late!! lol lot of good it's going to do now with a wil'in out teenager.

If I had pulled a stunt like that at that age, my father would have told me not to even bother trying to come back...to stay gone and support myself.

I didn't even pull a stunt like that, like maybe 1/4 of that and my dad told me the same thing!

LOL! I unplugged the internet last night, and it will continue, until my college student either gets it together or moves out and pays for their own life. I'm not going to support laziness!

Don't you need the interwebs for college these days? That may be overkill.

The parent should feel bad regardless do to their poor choices of raising their son! Kid needs to learn. The X-box is not the worst decision the parent has made in regards to their son!

+1, there were many worse decisions in the many years before.

Hey I know, lets all get pissed and hate the inanimate objects that undisciplined people can start to obsess over, and simply get rid of them. (I wonder what we'd have left, lol)
