when does menopause usually happen?

i'm 41. i had my hormones checked and they are still great. i have an iud now, but until i got it, i got regular periods and got pregnant last year without trying. I mean, while trying NOT to get pregnant. that's how fertile i am- i get pregnant easily.

but still, someone who knows my age will eventually say something about hot flashes and ask if i have them, or assume i do. or they say something about how 'we' don't have to worry about getting a period anymore and i have to tell them that i do (or would, if i didn't have the IUD).

what age does that usually happen?

oh, thanks.
since getting the IUD and not having a period anymore because of it (i LOVE the mirena), i'm hoping it doesn't all start happening for a while. According to my current OBGYN, and the one i had for most of my life, i won't be starting it till late. I don't know how they know- maybe my blood work up.

i didn't think it was normal to start now, but i hear about it all the time. A woman I work with (a little older than me) recently said "i don't know if you still have to worry about it, but there's room in the bathroom cabinet if you need to store stuff."

YES i still have to worry about it! (although i don't). i'm 41, not 81!
lol

Sometimes you can go by when your mom went through it. I've heard of women well into their 50s who haven't gone through it yet.

I'd like to be 60 and still buying tampons for myself, personally. I don't want to go through it. Fuck living forever, I just wish they'd figure out how to prevent menopause.

oh. cool.
thanks.

my mom had a hysterectomy, so i don't know when she would have gone through it. she had her tubes tied at 22 (she was not really into the whole "motherhood" thing).

God, it varies so greatly. I started perimenopause in my late 30's. I'm 52 and just entered menopause only a few moths ago. It normally goes according to when your mother had menopause, howerver my mother was in menopause at 45; go figure!

The symptoms creep up slowly and you don't even know what's happenning. To determine if you're going through perimenopause look at the symptoms. I doubt you are, but here they are, nonetheless.

Fatigue.
Carving for sweets or carbs.
Weight gain.
Hot flashes and night sweats.
PMS.
Feeling depressed or overwhelmed.
Mood swings or irritability.
Imsomnia or restless sleep.
Headaches.
Loss of livido.
Fuzzy thinking.
Digestive issues.
Joint paint.
Anxiety.
Heart palpitations.
Breast pain.
Adult acne.
Urinary dysfunction.
Unwanted hair growth.
Hair loss.
Dry skin.
Vaginal dryness.
Irregular periods.
Fibroids.

I know you'll say "but I get most of those"! LOL!
I used to get quite a bit of these symptoms. Now, I don't have any with the exception of some hot flashes, which are now non existent. Not fun! But, Bioidentical hormones gets rid of most of it.

I think you are safe!!
However, keep it in mind so when it starts; you can just zap it right on so you don't have to go throught these terrible symptoms and believe me, they are.

Thank goodness for science!! If it weren't for the bio-identical hormones, I seriously think I would have just jumped off a cliff somewhere. Perhaps it would not have seemed so bad if I only had *normal life* stresses... or who knows, maybe the fact that it is sorta hitting me now (that is the emotional part) that all the stress I have been living with for so long just SEEMED to be worse?

Either way, thank you (again) to Thandie for being so willing to share her experience and knowledge about a topic that quite frankly, up until I e-met you was TOTALLY TABOO. As Stiletto seemed to imply that it was something that only women who thought other women who were going through it (for whatever reason) would even make the vaguest mention of. Goodness forbid we publicly talk about the fact that we aren't fertile anymore (whether we want to be or not) as if somehow this would make us less valuable or desirable.

I've said this so many times, but Thandie, you are SUCH a tremendous role model for so many reasons. If YOU can make this *scary* (but natural) part of life sexy then I am hoping I will be able to pull it off too. :)

You are pulling it off, you just don't know it.
I see you're making changes with exercising, drinking water, drinking less alcohol, etc. That's how they happen...one-step-at-a-time.

Stilleto - you can be in peri-menopause for as long as 10 years before losing your monthly cycle and have significant hormonal changes. This book was recommend to me - you might want to check it out. Amazon.com: The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change, 2nd Edition: Christiane Northrup: Books

Here is a quote from the author Dr. Christiane Northrup:

“Once you engage your own inner wisdom, you can change or improve your habits of thought, your emotions, and your behaviors…and create a more positive and joyful life experience right away,” Dr. Northrup says. “This process, when engaged in regularly, heals both your present and your future. It also enables you to live a life full of joy, meaning, and purpose—right here, right now.”

thanks guys. :)

I think i'm good - my skin is clearer than ever, sex drive is still high, no mood swings. hopefully that'll stay like that... but i wont' hold my breathe.
