When washing colors, add a small amout of salt to the wash.

It is THE WATER itself that makes the clothing clean and the not temperature of it. The detergent is only a luge that helps the dirt particles become slippery so that the water (rinsing) can wash it away.

Also more (when it come to detergent) is not better. It is better to have ample water (meaning do not pack the washer full of clothing) than to put waaaaaaay too much detergent in your wash. I only use 1/4 of the recommended amount of detergent/softner/bleach and my clothing gets just as clean. Been doing this FOR YEARS ever since watching The Magic School bus and learning this little known fact.
