Whats the deal with brown rice. :jenscatI know i should be eating whole grain foods, but I just dont get it. Could someone please explain this to me?

Ive been told that wholemeal foods just have brown dyes in them. Like wholemeal bread. But a friend once told me that white charbs are fake charbs. Could someone help me here?

Cheers

your body reckonizes white flour like sugar and its high on the glycemic index so its not a great source of energy. basically the sugar breaks down in your body to fast and leaves you feeling tired quicker, where as brown rice or oatmeal break down slowly it provides energy for a longer period. its all a matter of energy. hope that helped

Yeah thanks matv, that does help.

But why does it have to be brown? I hate advertising and their lies it makes me fear that its just normal rice with dye in it?

Also i have a suspision. (This might seem irrelevant at first but keep reading) I was once told by the people at the health store that shampoos arent suppose to foam up during the time you wash your hair, well infact, it makes no difference wether it does or not. However, the shampoo makers use an extra product in the ingredients so it does foam when you use it. Why? Well basicaly... she said its so people feel more like their hair is being washed. So maybe its the same idea with brown pasta and rice being dyed so people think there eating wholemeal. Even though they probably are, but its more of a reasurring thing or its easily spotable on shelves or something like that... Man if i was cereal box maker i would just dye all my products deep blue so they stand out from the rest like anything! Does all this make sense?

Please people discuss...

buy brown rice from health food stores and you will be fine. organic brown rice.

great complex carbs. these are the keys to building muscle as much as anything.

I'm new to the form and i could use a little assistance. been in kungfu (shaolin & sanshu) for a while and my cardio has been excellent, except for the fact i'm aging!! I'm 42 and i feel as though i need to improve my diet. i haven't been counting calories and all of that, but i now need help with this. I am currently 5'8", 165-170lbs (on the thin side). I'm not looking to put on 20lbs! I'd like to get around 10ish. I have some suppliments (friends tell me this and that is for this and that!) that i'm don't completely understand the cycles, etc.. I've never delt with this before and I need to learn a little more about dieting.
Could someone help me or guide me with this?
Am I in the right place for this kind of question??
Appreciate the help.

You should make a seperate thread for your queastion because its off topic here.

Other wise im a little the same. I dont know a great deal either.

If your not sure... A 'thread' is what you see here. Each thread is under different catergories of interest. And posts are what you write inside the threads like im donig now. To create a new thread go to where you see all the threads made by everyone else and click up the top left on the 'new thread' icon and start writing. You will figure it out...

Brown rice is better for you because it is easier to break down, gives off energy. Get past the color, that is not what matters...

The brown rice that I eat is a medium grain and its more dense and chewy, as its brown. There is no way it is just dyed. And with bread, wholemeal flour is used rather than wheat flour in order to make wholemeal bread.

Brown rice tastes like crap imo.

Whether you eat predominantly complex carbs or simple carbs really doesn't have much bearing on gaining muscle provided adequate carbs are taken in.

Now which is healthier is another story, but then again eating lots of whole fruit while being simple carbs are actually extremely healthy.

I had the easiest time leaning out by eating around 6 pieces of fruit a day with low fat milk and white rice as my main carb sources believe it or not.
